    Mick's Kick

    Is it just me, or is Mick getting a little unreliable from the set kick again. Don't get me wrong, he is a brilliant player and does things only Mick can. Running the wrong way and popping a kick blind over his shoulder that slots through or what he did on Sun when he held the ball up over the line shows that his class is unique. But put him 30-40 out on any angle and he seems at best a 50/50 bet. And that's the thing, he gets into positions and takes marks only he can get to, but seems (lately) to be off. Which is a bummer because if he finished better he could potentially kick so much more. I just find it frustrating.

    having sadi that, games like Sunday make going to the game worth it all year. You can't buy that feeling.

      I've never been enormously confident when he is kicking for goal from a set shot.

          I would back him to kick a left foot banana from a pocket than a set shot 30 metres out.
          I thought he had improved a bit but I was mistaken.

              His accuracy is not what worries me so much, anyone can fluff a gimme.
              Usually he's great with angles, far better than Barry or any of the other forwards. It's his range that's getting to be a worry, this year anything beyond 35 metres is starting to look like a challenge for him (45 has been outside his range for several seasons).

              Speaking of goal shooting, did anyone notice the shot NOG had from 45 in the first quarter.
              He's got a kick like a mule (sorry "like an Ablett") and yet he was looking to pass off.
              Perhaps it's the 45m line playing with his mind in which case I'm glad it's gone for the season.

                  Maybe his Hammy injury is inhibiting him enough to, not kick it correctly.

                  But he did lay a fantastic tackle.

                      Never been over confident with him from a set shot either.

                      On the other hand, spinning blindly and throwing the ball on his foot from 30m out on a 75 degree angle I am jumping up and down before the ball is even near the goals

                      Same with Willo.

                      Always worry with his set shots, but 60 meters out on a 45 degree angle running full pelt, you just know it's going through....

                          Great to see Williams is coming back, he seemed a little slow early on this year, but the last few weeks he has stormed back. Absolutley one guy who can change a game when he is on song. And Nicks! Geez, his hair will be growing back soon!

                              Right foot - YES. Left foot - NO!

                              "Mick don't got no left foot!" Sadly Mick is in fact one of the least dexterous players on the list. He just masks it really well, they don't call him Magic for nothing.

                              To the real issue and that is Mick has lost confidence on the set shot at the moment. His work around the ground is making up for it. His marking is outstanding, in fact his hands are just getting better with age.

                              His good mate Nicksy has been a masterstroke from Roosy too. Nicksy is moving really well and we just needed that burst of reliability near goal and he is a reliable set shot.

                                  Magic has run hot and cold for a few seasons now - probably the injuries we all know he carries. But when he has confidence he's unbeatable. I just hope it'll kick in soon as his marks are getting better and his kicking is worse. I always worry about Willo from a set shot but full bore from 60 and you know it's going to go through. Nicky D on the other hand doesn't even need a run from 60 - step, bang, goal. Come back soon Nick.

                                      FWIW, Mickey kicked 41.19 last year. Im not sure what the ratio is for set shots/on-the-run, but those stats look good to me - it makes him the most accurate full-time forward in the team in 2003. It also seems to me that he takes alot of his marks leading hard to a pocket. At the same time, he crumbs alot more goals than players his height should have a right to.

                                          Whenever Willo takes a mark within scoring distance, my Dad and I yell "play on"... he never does though
