i am basing these on picking up players that would be around for more than a year or two. also keen on hasleby, pavlich, mcphee but Judd if i can only have one.

with maguire, look at the size of him at 20 years old! he will be very scary in years to come!
I think everyone is forgetting one of the best players in the comp the last 3 seasons - Warren Tredrea.

Tredrea can take grabs on the lead and in a pack situation. His kicking is getting better and he is in the prime of his career.

What we need ( in an ideal world ) is the following 6 players -

Small Backman - Chris Johnson ( sets up every Brisbane attacking move from the backline )

Full Back - Matty Scarlett ( he's that good the dreaded flu doesn't infect Geelong as he stops it on the way from Melbourne ! )

Midfielders - Chris Judd ( just an absolute gun ) & Nathan Brown.

      CHF/FF - Warren Tredrea

FP - Phil Matera ( deceptively quick off the mark, good kick, knows where the goals are, ALWAYS plays )
Well somebody told me, You had a boyfriend, Who looks like a girlfriend,That I had in February of last year, It's not confidential, I've got potential

These are all very very good players, but many of them would not add a huge amount to the Swans side. Given that trading for established stars is an expensive business, I reckon you have to target players who are critical to the team's structure, not just "good" players, unless they fall into your lap ala Nicky D.

Johnson is superb, but setting up play from the backline is not a weakness of the Swans, and with Goodes back there now, it seems to have just got better.

            Scarlett - no arguments there.

            Judd - also no arguments.

Nathan Brown - very good player, though personally I can't stand him (bit like Akermanis)

Tredrea - OK, he's an exceptional player but our Bazza is becoming one too and I really don't think there is that much to choose between them. Tredrea gets a lot more hype than Hall for his performances. I'm sure they could both play in the same team but I don't think the improvement would be that great.

Matera - again a good player, but O'Loughlin plays a similar role in our team, albeit in a slightly different way.

Judd and Scarlett for me from that bunch. And if you could throw in a Riewoldt or Dal Santo along the way, I'd be happy!!

Chris Johnson would ADD another link to the backline when attacking out of defence. Brisbane have Leppitsch, the Scotts, Michael and one or two others attacking out of defence and I don't see them saying we don't require Johnson as we have other guns !! I chose Johnson because our Half-Back line ( Barry, Goodes & Kennelly ) only attacks whereas the backline of Matthews, Schauble, Bevan, Crouch etc etc are not as attacking a link, or a champion player, as Chris Johnson is.

As for players you don't like ( re Nathan Brown & Aker ), no-one liked Lockett or Hall when they came to the club, but how quickly did that change ?!

Let's face it, unless you rape, maim, torture, murder or kill someone and/or embezzle from family or friends, who cares about the personality and character of every footballer ( or person for that ) !! AFL footballers are not robots but individuals, no matter what type of personality they are.

On that note, give me Nathan Brown ( or Aker for that matter )any day running around for the Swans. Brown can gather 25 telling possies and a couple of goals in the middle or play forward and kick 4 or 5 - how handy is that !!??

The improvement wouldn't be that great with both Hall and Tredrea in the team - are you joking and give me a spell ! Hall and Tredrea would complement each other in the same way that Brown and Lynch at Brisbane, Lloyd and Lucas at Essendon and Tarrant and Rocca at Collingwood complement each other. Funny that, as these teams mentioned have competed in the last 5 GF's. It is harder to stop two big bodied tall forwards than it is one !!

Matera plays week in week out - O'Loughlin has missed 5 games per season since the late 90's. And they are different players anyways - O'Loughlin being a quickish tall forward, whereas Matera is a quick small forward. Again, these two would compliment each other greatly.

These players mentioned are only dreams that will never happen, but all 6 players mentioned would add greatly to our midfield, backline and defence in a way that consecutive flags would be a big possibility.

I think we have one of the most potent forward lines in the AFL. But, even when he's not kicking well, you need to have Baz, Plugger, Lloyd or the like there as the gathering point. We seem to have several options for ruckman (good thing too!) including Ball, Doyle, MJ, LRT. But no back-up for Baz. Any ideas who could evolve into that role over the next few years - or do we need to recruit someone? [/B][/QUOTE]

This may sound strange but Heath James as a pinch hitting goalsneak, he has good ball sense and can lead into the hole really well. I know they want him at full back but the guy can't chase against the quicks ... too many injuries. His goal on saturday was great. I have played lots of footy and understand goal sense, he looked to have had it with that intercept.

Brad Ottens is out of contract at the end of the year. He would be a good big man to pickup. Only 24, at least another 6+ years out of him!!

ottens would be great, however, EXTREMELY expensive, trade-wise

Certainly I would pick up Ottens..but what would be a good price? Whilst I'm tempted to go "don't throw away a first round pick" it should be remembered that Ottens is a guaranteed top ten pick quality player...not a top ten pick who might turn out to be "good ordinary" player (Aaron Fiora, Nick Fosdike) or not up to it altogether (I'd put their names down, but I've never heard of them 'cos they didn't make it!).

They'd want at least a top ten pick and a player....The only reasonable player we would even dream of letting go is Fosdike, and he's exactly the sort of trade that got Richmond into this trouble in the first place.

Now if we could just get our hands on Jared Rivers and Chris Judd we might go alright for the next ten years!

                      And another goalkicking key forward

With Ottens, i figure that the Crows will look to bring him home especially with clarke retiring....they've been trying to lure him back to SA for a while now.

I thought that the idea of this thread was that you could have any player you want?

Let's face it, any of the players mentioned so far would cost at least two first round picks in a trade, probably plus a player. The only way we'd realistically get any of them is if they were out of contract and we finished bottom and got the first pick in the pre-season draft.

It would be great to pick up any one champion, and on that basis I'd go for Scott West. But the optimum advantage would be to get a champion who's still got ten years of football in him . . . so then I'd have to go for Haselby.

Either of those players would get 30 possessions week in week out if they played in the current Swans team. That would definitely make us real contenders!!
