Apparently he didn't, actually...when you read the article.
"I'll acknowledge there are more talented teams in the competition but I won't acknowledge that there is a better team in the competition" Paul Roos March 2005
Originally posted by sharp9 Am I blind? I didn't see a quote to back up the headline. I didn't see anyone saying, "I will play next year," or "Maxi will be captain next year...or as long as he keeps playing."
In fact Roosey's quotes leave me thinking the door is very afar concerning who is playing or captaining next year. He is being extremely positve...yet doesn't make any predictions about next year. In fact, they "are yet to sit down and discuss next year."
Wherefore comes the headline?
Will this help clear it up for you????
Swans re-sign topline talents
By TIM MORRISSEY
June 11, 2004
THE Sydney Swans are quickly and quietly re-signing key players coming out of contract to consolidate the team's long term future.
However, Swans director of football Andrew Ireland also indicated the club will try to top up their playing list by trading for, or drafting, a couple of experienced key position players.
In the past few weeks inspirational Swans captain Stuart Maxfield has re-signed for another season while tough defender Ben Mathews and Jarrad McVeigh, the club's top-five pick from the 2002 AFL draft, have agreed to two-year deals.

Yes, this does seem to say something that the other article did not, that Maxfield has actually signed for next season.
Whether he plays or not is still not clear though, and whether he captains the club is also not clear.
The other article actually quoted the people involved though, who stated they would make a decision later in the year, so once this happens we'll know for sure.
"As a player he simply should not have been able to do the things he did. Leo was a 185cm, 88kg full-back and played on some of the biggest, fastest and best full-forwards of all time, and constantly beat them." Roos.
Leo Barry? you star! We'll miss ya, ''Leapin''.

No, just stating the obvious, which seems to be beyond you.
If you are so certain that Maxfield will play on, and captain the Swans in 2005, are you prepared to pay me $1000 AUD if he does not?
No you're not, because there is no guarantee he will, proving your argument to be invalid.

You don't think it's inherent in the article that the "inspirational" captain is being re-signed to continue in the job? The intention, I'd say, is clear. But of course he may not be captain next year or even on the team because, um, he may fall off a ladder working around the house or he could wreck his back doing weights. My guess is that the odds are about the same for Roos continuing as coach and a fit Maxfield being captain. It may not happen but I'll bet it does.

Did you read the bit where it said "they are yet to sit down and discuss next year"??? From this is it can be assumed that the Swans haven't actually "retained their leader" for next year, as the article's headline states.
That is all I am saying, nothing more, nothing less.
Of course it is likely he will play on and captain us in 2005, but the articles heading was not an accurate reflection of the facts. Comprende??
Note: A separate article has stated that Maxfield has actually re-signed for next year. Interesting that one article says they have not talked about 2005 and another says he is re-signed. This should be further evidence that you do not believe everything you read.
