Firstly, the internet is a form of cammunication where facial expressions and tones of voice etc are not an issue, therefore sometimes people come across differently than they intended.
If I misinterpreted what was said by Lizz or anyone else, then I appologise.

I am not a lawyer either.
In asking for a precedent I wasn't challenging anyone, but requesting it.
For all I know there are a million precedents of this sort out there, and if that is the case then there is no issue if they demand that we stop.

Charlie, I think what you hope for is a pipe dream to an extent.

I gave up hope long ago of the club ever partaking in something outside of their own site of the realm of the AFL 'big brother'.
If an interview is ever conducted with a player or an official of the Swans from RWO, I will be shocked.

Crazy that they don't use an outlet like this, but that's up to them....

Sorry if I came across too strongly, too. I was just trying to put a point of view I hold very dear. I'm a journalist, author and lawyer so I guess I'm looking at it from a different perspective. I have seen my articles pop up everywhere around the world and as long as it's not by someone making money from them I enjoy knowing more people see what I write. The freedom to disseminate information and opinion is something I regard as very precious.

But, as you say, it's your site.

The copyright law is unambigous - reposting complete articles is an infringement of copyright.

Commenting about an article is original work (by you) and therefore OK. Including a phrase or sentence or two to identify the particular aspect on which you wish to comment is also generally considered acceptable though there is no actual right to do so.

The more you quote the greyer (and then blacker) the position gets.

So having posted my first full article for the morning. I then noticed this thread and have read it. I then went back and removed the article and posted the link.

I'm not going to join the argument of right or wrong.

I think a single perpetual sticky thread could be used for all "Sydney Related News Articles". In there we could just post the links to the Article/s. It would become a massive thread over the course of time.

Alternatively, A weekly thread could be used as suggested starting on a Monday "Sydney related Articles - Week 21/6/04".

This would appease the AFL/Club/Media/Snivelling little Journos.

For those who are not registered to the media sites, registration is a simple process. You give Email address, they give news.

If you have trouble accessing the sites linked , PM the posters and I'm sure we would be happy to <s> post</S> offer assistance to help you read the article.

I'm happy to go with this process, but it may be a bit difficult, as I have just cut off my hands as a penalty. I will hve to learn to type with my toes or elbows.

I appreciate everyone who goes to the effort of posting Swans articles on this site. It saves me time and effort in having to find them myself. Clicking on a link is no effort at all. Many thanks to the regular posters.

Des, Have you tried asking permission from the usual sources directly if we can publish their articles here for analysis.
I doubt they would mind, and in return they may ask for a more prominant link or small banner with the article which would in fact attract more hits to them, and act as a form of advertising for their paper.

As for the last paragraph in "Why Register?", you have no guarantee that they won't spam you later, or later on sell your details. Many businesses these days pay lip service to contract laws at best, and such guarantees are not to be trusted.

For these reasons, I don't trust commercial websites where compulsory registration is required, so I won't be registering.

As for the posting of articles, here's what I suggest be posted whenever we post links to artcles:

• Headline of the article. I like to put these in bold so they stand out better.
• The name of the website that the artcle is on (eg: "AFL web site"), along with a link to the site's home page. The site could be one that your reader doesn't know about yet and is chock-full of articley goodness.
• A one-sentence summary of the article that you write yourself. If you write it yourself, you can be sure that you are not infringing on the rights of others.
• Link to article, thus giving the hosting site the page-view that they crave.
• If the website requires soul-sucking "free registration" to read the article, this should be stated so that you don't make people waste their time clicking on links to articles that they cannot view straight away.

im not gonna go into the moral reasoning behind this thread as i normally click on the link anyway and read it from the site...

with the sticky idea...

can a sticky become a non-sticky? so that when that week is up rather than deleting the content, it can slip down the thread list into oblivion, but if you want to go back to an article it will be easy to find.

also, make the sticky with links only and if people want to discuss the news within the article start another thread on it???

I like the sticky/non-sticky idea. But having one thread with links and another with discussion becomes very clumsy in my opinion. Best to keep it all in one spot.

This is a problem, true.

However, how many posts started with articles end up with discussions that run for more than a few posts? Major news ends up starting its own thread anyway at the moment, so I wouldnt expect much to change.

And each article would probably have been discussed before the next one is listed, or close enough. It isnt like all the week's articles are posted in one go, leaving the rest of the thread for comments. It would all be relatively interspersed.

But if this is a problem, why bother having just one thread for all news articles? The only thing that has changed since yesterday is that the whole body of the report isnt copied. Why not keep the system much like it is now, where if someone finds a new article, they just start a new thread and post the link.
