The Brownlow is not a great measure of the best players in the comp. Usually it manages to pick one of the best to win, but many good players don't poll well and the order is not particularly meaningful.

Exactly, especially given that Chris Judd finished below Jude, and only 3 above Fossie.

The Brownlow tends to go to midfielders and ruckmen, it's rare that a brownlow is won by a fullback or full forward.

Mind you, they pick Swans players about every 6 to 8 years, so they do pick the best players regularly

Just one other comment on this, which I thought of today (and has been raised before), one of the problems with J Bolton is he doesn't keep his feet enough. His first option is nearly always to dive into the pack and try to grab the ball. Admirable courage but not always the best option. Have a look at somewhat like Simon Black, who spends plenty of time in packs but also recognises when to keep his feet. More importantly though, when he does dive into a pack, he has the ability to grab the ball, find an option and deliver to that option before being swallowed by the pack. This is one thing that separates the really effective clearers from the rest.

yeh cos normally the winner is from a middle of the ladder team so we win a lot... tho the last view years its very much the top teams with brownlows... in fact the last few have at least played in the grand final

It's actually from a mix, not normally from the middle of the ladder, and most of the time it actually comes from the top third of the ladder - a finalist.

Here is a list of where the team(s) of the Brownlow medallist(s) finished.

                              2003: 2, 3, 5
                              2002: 1
                              2001: 1
                              2000: 2
                              1999: 9
                              1998: 7
                              1997: 2
                              1996: 3, 4
                              1995: 12
                              1994: 3
                              1993: 1
                              1992: 3
                              1991: 4
                              1990: 7
                              1989: 2
                              1988: 7
                              1987: 1, 10
                              1986: 1, 4
                              1985: 3
                              1984: 9
                              1983: 3
                              1982: 8
                              1981: 4, 9
                              1980: 10
                              1979: 2
                              1978: 2
                              1977: 5
                              1976: 10
                              1975: 7

When I started watching football, the first few medals were to low or middle sides, so I thought that was how it would be most of the time. However, most of the time it actually tends to go to finalists, and this has been even more pronounced since 1991 (not just because the number of finalists is larger).

Of the 19 medals to 1990, 9 were in the top third, 5 in the middle third and 5 in the bottom third. Reasonable mix, but skewed towards the top.

Of the 16 from 1991 to 2003, 13 were in the top third, 1 in the middle third and 2 in the bottom third. Very skewed towards the top.
Captain Logic is not steering this tugboat.

Wouldn't this be because most of the 3 and 2 votes go to players from the winning side in each match?
