Once every 16 years would be a reasonable return. Any less means the club is crap. Let's allow time for the move from South Melbourne, etc and our time should be now (the next few years). We have faith in our coach and are impressed by most of our team - we should be aiming for the return of a flag, on average, every eight years.

The idea of losing something by seeing the end of an era when the Swans have a premiership within a century is a very strange way of thinking. But, then again, I know of someone who had a ticket to see his team play in the Grand Final and got to the MCG but couldn't go in because he wouldn't be able to bear it if they lost. I don't know if they lost or not - with that attitude it's irrelevant. You follow a team to enjoy the wins - why not aim for the ultimate? Or not follow a team at all and just appreciate the interplay of teams and tactics through a season?

2003 holds some of my favourite Swannies memories, and they haven't diminished simply because we didn't win a flag. I think I've said before though that I'm all for the journey - there's nothing like anticipation (and yes, the letdown is often pretty crappy). I don't think I quite understand the whole deal about it being 70 years since we've won a premiership. Unless you were alive, what does it matter? You can't remember it, you weren't watching and cheering the players week in, week out. I feel about as much happiness about the 1933 Swans premiership as I do about every other clubs previous premierships. It's all about me you see Unless I experienced it, it means nothing.

It's good that not all Swans fans are alike. We can all enjoy it on our own level.

I can now replay the journey for $29.95 on DVD. So the journey is not important to me at all, winning a bloody flag is!!

Nah, what was in the past has gone . . . it's worthless.

All that counts is this year's flag.

And when that's gone, all that will count is next year's flag.

              And when that's gone . . . .

In the meantime, I'm enjoying the journey.

Sure, focussing on just the premiership is a sure way to wanting to slit your wrists. Good enjoyable football on the way is definitely an important part (as I mentioned in another thread), however the journey is meaningless if it goes nowhere. Afterall, we're not Monkey and Tripitaka heading to India!
Is the Port final win from last year any less of a memory because we didn't go on to win the flag? To me, it isn't. Nothing in all the time I've watched football has compared to the exhilaration I felt when the siren went in that game.
Yep, it was very exciting, but these things fade after a while. Making only our second final since the war in 1977 was incredibly exciting, and I still remember the joy of us making it and then going the following week, however these things do not suffice by themselves.
2003 will still be part of the journey when we win a flag, whenever that may be. Just as winning the spoon in 1991 was part of the journey towards 2001 for Brisbane fans.
And so will winning 1 game in 1993 or 2 games in 1975 for us. However, these things aren't particularly meaningful if we never win.

It was FUN, and that's what football is about.
Absolutely. The sport itself is worth watching. However, winning is also enjoyable, and disappointments are not.

Then it never happens. What can you do? Do you know, along the journey, that it will never happen? No, so therefore the journey that is unfinished is still, if you choose, untainted by regret. If you are two minutes away from certain death, will it be not seeing a premiership that you will think of? If not, and I doubt it would be, then what difference does it make?
After a while you start to wonder if the journey will never end. That starts to take some gloss off it.

I really enjoy plane journeys - I find them very exciting. However, that doesn't mean I don't want them to reach their destination in a reasonable time.

Also, just wondering how many people who are simply 'enjoying the journey' have been following the Swans for less than ten years?

The journey is not enjoyable if there is no glorious end to it. The journey becomes enjoyable when you've won the flag and you know your team will play good football with a chance of winning it again. This is what makes the journey as [say] a Bomber supporter always exciting.

Of course it will happen! The law of averages says so.

Ah of course - in fact the more years we don't win it, the bigger our domination will be when our time comes. Imagine next century - we'll win every second year!!

                          Shame we won't see it!
