If you're visiting for Swans vs Magpies game, you should be considering something close to the TS.

Depends really what you mean by cheap ? close ? and clean !

But really cheap and relatively clean: Captain Cook hotel has pub style backpackers, not sure but think you get your own room. You can literally roll home its that close!

There is a motel near racecourse called "Thoroughbred motel" which on non race days is pretty good value i believe.

further away basically anywhere in Randwick, or City/Central all pretty close by bus/train

Gemini Hotel in Randwick is good value

$80 a night, about 3.5 stars and in a shopping district.

Just want to sound a warning about the Thoroughbred - it qualifies as cheap but not as clean. We stayed there once, never again, was smelly and in one of the two rooms we had the shower had mold. Thankfully we were only there one night.

The Gunsynd a couple of blocks from the Thoroughbred (it's either in Anzac Parade or Alison Road) never gave us any problems, however it has been several years since we were there so take that with a grain of salt. For the Hawks game last year we stayed at the Capital Square Hotel in George St, which was reasonably cheap and very close to Central Station. Getting to the ground would require a taxi, or a longish walk. That one included breakfast and - I think - was $136 for a double room.

LOL. I've never heard Randwick described as a "shopping district" before.

The Gemini is fine - a 45 minute walk to the ground, close to food shops and the tariff includes transport to and from the airport. Also it always seems to be available.

The Gemini is situated next to two shopping centres, restruants, cafes, ten pin bowling and a street full of shops. Whilst these aren't exactly your boutique fashion houses, I felt the best way to describe this would be a shopping district.

Let's change it to entertainment district.

My point is, it's not in the middle of nowhere like the Thoroughbred Motel.
