    Yoga/Pilates

Are the players doing any back strengthing exercises, such as yoga or pilates? I understand that having a strong back reduces the indicence of hamstring injuries.
    It is certainly worth considering.
    Bring it on!

The Swans were apparently the first team to introduce Pilates. Around 2001-2002 I think.

I read that Nicks did try both of those a while back with his bad back.

I know Kate Agnew was teaching them Pilates / Yoga before she fell pregnant - not sure if they had a new instructor after she had her baby in October last year - or if she's returned as the instructor <g>

Heath was doing pilates several years ago. Pilates actually goes back to the WWII, so it's hardly new fangled stuff!

Last time I heard, it was still on the training schedule. If you look at some of the stretches that the players do before a game, there is a mix of yoga and pilates in there.

The real trouble is that they don't start pilates/yoga/dancing at 5. I'm 35 and stopped dancing at 14 and stopped playing football at 19, but I can still (almost) put my head on my knee...with a straight leg. The solution to (especially) hamstrings is to get limber at a very early age. It takes ages to lose it. By 17 it's too late to catch up.

"Warming up" is not the solution. If you can put your leg behind your ear then slipping while running is not going to tear your hamstring.....and neither will a fresh airy!

I presume you are being facetious (with the wink being present). If you think either of them are for softies you obviously haven't tried them. Brett Lee does pilates and got quite cross with the panel on the Tony Squires show when they started sniggering.
Sharp9 you are right in saying it is best if you keep active from a young age but one can increase one's flexibility at any age.

I'll back you on that. I've tried Pilates a couple of times, and it's bloody hard.

edit: of course all you girls would consider pilates hard. Your girls. Not footballers
