    An Interesting Story

Something unusual happened to me last Saturday on my way hame from the big game and I just thought I'd share it with you all and get your thoughts.

I was on a CityRail bus travelling between Padstow & Revesby stations( no trains on the East Hills line last weekend) when a gentleman sitting a couple of rows behind asked me about the game. Just general things (result, controversy, transport costs etc). However, following this he launched into a stinging tirade about how he was a St Kilda supporter and had once played in the Sydney AFL and how in his mind the Swans had not done enough to promote the local competition and that they had in fact taken publicity away from it and were only interested in promoting themselves and not the local game. He concluded his diatribe as we both got off the bus at Revesby by saying that he hoped that the Sydney Swans would fold.

He spoke with absolute hatred for the Swans and I must admit I really struggled to hold myself back from replying and possibly starting a real barney.

Maybe he had been drinking but I just could not believe a Sydneysider could hate the Swans the extent that this guy seemed to.

maybe he had delusions that he would be the next Warwick Capper but the call never came, still harbouring a bit of bitterness perhaps!

it takes all sorts I suppose.

I have had an argument like that before (wonder if same person lol)

Bit of a worry if the Swans don't worry about themselves!!! seeing we have an AFL NSW Commission set up to look after footy in this state and the Swans are simply meant to be a team in the National Competition???

This guy may have liked to have told you how much publicity the Sydney AFL got at pre 1982 or let alone pre 1996, and how on earth the Sydney Swans would be hurting any type of AFL in this state!!

Some people are so funny and as already mentioned..he is a St.Kilda supporter!

Opionions are like arse@#*#s - everyone has one !!

I bet this bloke is really irked with the Swans because Simon Minton-Connell took his place at Full-Forward in the early Nineties !! And being a Saints fan that he is, he probably is still complaining about Lockett, O'Brien and Hall going to the Swans from the Saints !!

If I was on that train with this bozo, I would have stopped him before the verbal diarrhea came out of his mouth and then explained the following to him -

            1. The Swans don't have to promote the AFL in Sydney, as that is the responsibility of the AFL and consequently the AFL set up the NSWAFL. Therefore, the best the Swans could do was offer assistance to the NSWAFL.

            2. The Swans will never be disbandoned, as the VFL/AFL dumped the Swans there in the first instance without any concessions and incentives, and then had the nerve to let a bozo ( Edelston ) with a shocking financial history buy the club, so the least they could do was financially and wholeheartedly assist the Swans in the last 5-10 years considering that we are the only club to pay a licence fee even though we were an existing orginal club of the VFL.

            3. The Saints should have been either merged, disbandoned or shipped interstate many years earlier due to there always shocking financial state and poor/woeful/pitiful administrative and on-field history dating back to the mid-seventies.

Why do I never encounter these bozo's - except Essendon supporters who are always not worth bothering with due to there idiocy and biased Sheedyisms !!??

Roos stated in an article a week or two back that the southern states have a real problem getting it around their heads that to grow the code in Sydney, a strong Sydney Swans are a must.

No amount of money poured into grass roots football in Sydney will do any good if the Swans struggle year after year. They are just p1ssing it up against the wall if the Swans cannot capture the imagination of the people, kids in particular.

Kids don't go for losers, unless they are like our kids and we force them,no matter what to follow Sydney. Kids are shallow and don't like copping the ribbing from schoolmates etc. generally speaking.

Judging by the masses and masses of kids playing kick-to-kick on the SCG after the Saints game, I think the kids' imaginations have been captured.

Exactly. Pubs all over the world are full of 'champions' who's careers were cut short. The only reason they didn't set the AFL on fire and become the next Carey is that they fell over a sprinkler one cold foggy night at training .... or the wife made them give it up etc.

It's never that they weren't good enough.

That view it seems is very common amongst 'old' supporters of the SFL and indeed VFL in Sydney. Long term supporters of Aussie Rules in Sydney viewed the Swans as mere interlopers that stuffed up the local competition and put nothing back. They will not of course grant that the Swans could not run their own club, win games or draft properly for many years!

There is a case I suppose, that the the local competition was once reputedly quite a thriving little comp. John Northey Captain-Coached Wests (SFL)for a few years in the early seventies when he was still a 'name'.

I have heard virtually the same speech many times.

As a Swans fan I could not believe there was a groundswell of Aussie Rules lovers in Sydney (albeit small) who seemed to hate the Swans with a passion, for exactly the same reasons this mysterious train traveller did!
                            fork on, man!
