    Future Father Sons

    Hey people,

Just wondering if there are any real father son prospects coming through the junior ranks.

Other clubs seems to have some real prosepects including Jessie Smith for the Roos etc. and i think our last father son was Sean Dempster.

Dylan and Tyler Roos are good junior players but a long way off (lol) Marc Murphy looks good for Brisbane. My Sydney spies tell me that Langford has three sons and Wil in particular looking a future prospect. The Swans cupboard looking a bit bare though

The NSW team at the underage championships going on at the moment feature the son of former Australian Rugby League champion Gary Jack, apparently the kids small but is still being looked at as a draft choice.
Perhaps we should claim the sons of all leaguies the way WA and SA can claim the sons of those who only played in the WAFL or SAFL?

Paul Bevan also comes from a league background.

And interestingly enough given the Langfords kids go to a big $$$ private school have a guess which code of football they are being made to play

...who sadly don't qualify for the Swans under the F&S rule.

If they go to Riverview, they would have a choice!

                I'm on the Chandwagon!!!

If you cannot compete for the premiership, it's better to be young and exciting than middle-aged and dowdy.

The AFL are crazy if they don't think this kind of thing has a trickel down effect.

Correct, did not play enough games for us (missed out by a couple) but I remember reading somewhere that coaching may also qualify your son as well if it is at the same club as they played.

                    Can anyone clarify that?

I think the coach/administrator rule was revoked. One thing about father/son selections though, unless the boy is a gun they can cause more trouble than they are worth, sometimes sentiment overrules better judgement. North acknowledged this with Andrew Krakouer and picked someone more suited to need, Collingwood might seem to have too many Clokes and Shaws.

Don't think this was revoked. Believe it will take into account games played and coached.

The administrator part certainly was, they were talking about this recently in relation to David Cloke, Canberra and the Swans.

Pity John Murphy only played 23 games for us instead of 123 - from all reports Marc looks like a gun, and will be going to the team that doesn't need any more gun players

                              My friend sent me this:

Games only ever apply to players - officials and coaches need more than 5 years. You would think that would happen with Roosey, but still a few years for rules to change I guess.

                              The Father/Son Rule
A club can draft a player as a second or third round selection if his father:

                              - played 100 or more senior VFL/AFL matches with any one club; or
                              - served for MORE than 5 years as President, Vice-President, General Manager, Football Manager, Senior Coach or elected member of the Senior Grade Committee of any club, and the player has not been registered with the AFL as a player for any club, then the club which the players Father played or served for can select him.

In addition, if a player's father played at least one senior game in the WAFL prior to 1987, or in the SANFL prior to 1991, prior to the above qualifications (100 games/5 years), then an AFL club in the respective States of those competitions can select him under this rule.

This rule also applies to fathers having played in the QAFL or SFL (NSWAFL) at any time (providing it is not to provide entitlement under this rule) for AFL clubs in the respective states of those competitions.
