    Midfielders

Just thinking about the McGlone debate, I looked at the entire Swans team, and boy do we seem to have an abundance of midfielders.

First you've got the current midfielders (of which only the first 2 should retire anytime soon):

    Williams
    Maxfield
    Kirk
    Bolton, J
    Mathews
    Crouch
    Fosdike

Then you've got the guys fighting for a top 22 spot who often play either forward/back, but have all shown an ability in the midfield:

    Schneider
    Buchanan
    Bevan
    Ablett
    Fixter
    McVeigh

Then you've got the guys who haven't played a game, but seem to fill some sort of midfield position:

    Schmidt
    Malceski
    McGlone
    Willoughby

    That's a lot of midfielders!

I also forgot about Goodes, the everywhere man!

I think this is ok at this stage of our development, because the team is still under performing in the midfeild. IE we are not the team with the best midfeild nor are we even in the top eight as far as midfeild performance goes.
This is precisley why Mcglone must get a shot.
Any self satisfaction , or sense of entitlment that could creep in to our midfeild would be deadly.
Lets face it to do what we want to do, we need to get 4 gunn midfeilders working together , with another 4-6 very very good midfeilders supporting them.
This is what the competition in Brisbane, saint kilda and port have at their disposal. If we don't get it then we will always be pretenders.
So anyone who is truely showing somthing in the midfeild (like back to back 40 + possesions), must be given a shot. We are still down at least 2 gunns in there.

You do need a lot of midfielders for rotation purposes but when it is all said and done it is the quality which really counts. West Coast, Brisbane and to a lesser extent Adelaide has the best quality on-ballers at their disposal. Schneider must be developed for future purposes and I am amazed that Roos hasn't really seen fit to use Davis here as early in his career, and according to my Sydney spies as a junior, he played his best footy here.

It was public knowledge this pre-season that Roos wanted Davis to build up his fitness to play in the midfield. Unfortunately, injuries have not, and will not, allow for this to happen this year.
