Thank god that idea was thrown out, but at that stage, the support for the swans was nowhere to be seen and would have been pushed through with little fight if they wanted it.
Scary isn't it ? The majority of current members would really be none the wiser. The word Swans would be as relevant to them as the word Bloods is now.

Why do we get people on this forum who have no respect for the history and culture of our club, constantly want to change things that families have bonded with for generations now.

Football is not rugby or NRL where clubs change names colours and team songs at the drop of a hat. If you want to watch a sport where everything is created and gimmicky for the media try supporting Super 12 rugby where a a majority of the teams do not even represent an area specifically (Golden Cats, Stormers, Sharks).

We are the Swans because of all the West Australians who played for South in the 1930s. Considering we were based at the Albert Park Lake it kinda fitted any way.

I have a huge problem with people who remain complete ignorant to what damage a name or colour change could do to our supporter base, especially the traditionalists in Melbourne who would very likely just walk away from the club completely.

We are an AFL footy club that has existed since the 1860s, not some wanky Seppo-like created team with a nobby name like "Power, Surge and Galaxy".

Swans it is, and Swans it will remain forever. No ifs, no buts.

This thread is completely embarrassing. Again surface level Sydneysiders with no concept for loyalty or tradition making comments that show their complete naivity to the tribal culture of football.

Wecome to the Foxtel generation I guess.

As I have said before when this topic was brought up, if the club changed its name and colours then I would stop supporting this club and I know I'm not the only one who feels this way.

In any case, what point is there in changing our name??? Doing so won't get us any extra supporters, it will cost us.

I think that AFL is the greatest sport on earth but does our club have the best name. In the League dominated state of NSW, where football is tough, maybe we need a strong, macho name to suit the game. After all we are not a lawn bowls club or a ping pong club. Men are men and the girls are glad.

Is the name Swans better suited to Fairy tales, Womans Weekly or men in tights. When you see other clubs like Eagles, Tigers, Bombers, Demons, are we looking a bit limp wristed, girly, whimps.

My idea is 'The Sydney Reds'.
The fans would be 'The Red Army'.

This fits well with the club colours as well. What do you think ?

I think the thing some people seem to forget is that the brand "Sydney Swans" is one of the best known brands in the country.

I would even be cheeky enough to suggest we would have the biggest brand recognition of all the AFL clubs.

If the swans nickname was ever going to be changed, it had to be done years before now.

                Any debate now is pointless.

But never say never I guess..... bet if you told a South Melbourne fan in 1933 that one day South's fans would need to travel to Sydney to watch a Swans home match, they would laugh in your face!

I recall in the 80's when some cretin brought up the idea/rumour that we were going to change the jumper to an "All Sky Blue" in the NSW tradition.

They would have lost every Melbourne Supporter.

Tamper with the name and colours and you would instanly lose 6,500 paid up Melbourne members and a potential 10,000 other Melbourne supporters.

Would also suggest (and judging by the comments above) you would lose a significant amount of support in Sydney as well.

No need to even discuss this subject anymore as the time has long passed that we would do something like this.

The only change I now advocate for is back to the Red V for games held in Melbourne.

That and a premiership would just about see me out I reckon........
