I think that AFL is the greatest sport on earth but does our club have the best name. In the League dominated state of NSW, where football is tough, maybe we need a strong, macho name to suit the game. After all we are not a lawn bowls club or a ping pong club. Men are men and the girls are glad.

Is the name Swans better suited to Fairy tales, Womans Weekly or men in tights. When you see other clubs like Eagles, Tigers, Bombers, Demons, are we looking a bit limp wristed, girly, whimps.

My idea is 'The Sydney Reds'.
The fans would be 'The Red Army'.

This fits well with the club colours as well. What do you think ?
Stupid idea. And those names suck anyway

Don't remember that. I do remember when Edelston first took over that he wanted to change the name and the colors. Colors were a proposed green and gold. Don't know what name they were thinking though.

Swans it is, and Swans it will remain forever. No ifs, no buts.

absolutely sums it up from an ex victorians point of view JF well done

So, after 22 years of slowly building a supporter base in an alien state, and the last 8 years building on that base with on field success, lets just change the name, coz its wimpy!!

I didn't know the team when they were SMFC, but I know a few people who were and the y still call them "Souths" or "the bloods". And a lot of them are still bitter at the move to Sydney. (Just ask Grubby). So to lose the "Swans" Label would be, like losing the team altogether.

I can only feel that a name change would be detrimental to the Sydney and Melbourne Supporter Base.

              So I say NO too.

Thanks for that JF. I didn't know that was a reason.

I think one of the reasons my family follows the Swans is that when we moved to Sydney from South Fremantle 20 years ago we didn't need to buy new scarves.

As with most Melb supporters, I am totally against the idea of a change.

I, for one, reckon Cyggy is one of the best, mot recognised mascots and would hate to see him go.

I would hate the idea of some mascot named Captain Red (after all Captain Blood is taken) pooncing around the SCG on a hovercraft that has been re-modelled to look like the Sydney Ferry

The club has learned from the mistakes it made in breaking from the tradition and has embraced the Melb supporters and the link with the past and all the great Swans players

I still yell GO BLOODS!!! occasionally...but GO SWANEES!!!!!!!!! is just as good a catchcry!!!

I believe that "swans" was more or less a nickname that stuck to south melbourne and only formally become part of the name of the club with the move to sydney.

i don't think either the name should be changed, but i am keen to see "the bloods" as another old nickname become a bit more common.

as for changing colours, thank god that never happened. could have been worse than what was suggested though and we were remodelled in edelstens own image of jaundice yellow and grey.
then again, i think it would be worth trying 15-16 players on field so what would i know

I don't think he was necessarily trying to stir things up. Post count to me doesn't mean anything. I mean, I often change my account details at least once a year (sometimes more if I get banned ). And, if he was trying to stir things up, it was a pretty lame attempt. My blood certainly didn't hit boiling point (which , generally, is a pretty easy thing to do )

There are three names that I would be OK with:

                              The Swans
                              The Bloods
                              The Monorails

                              Alright, there's only two names.

I just opened this topic up for a laugh, to read how everyone is reacting.
Pointless topic because it's not gonna happen, but FWIW here is my opinion.

                                Never be the Bloods again.
I doubt the AFL would permit it in their family game anyway.

If the club WERE to change their name, I would still support them.

Some people pehaps wouldn't, just as they weren't going to if Carey came to the Swans.
That's up to them, but Isupport what is Sydney, what was South Melbourne and whatever it will be in the future.

I didn't stop supporting them when they moved, and I wouldn't should they change their name again...
The difference between insanity and genius is measured only in success.
