    Tanking

Should have the Swans tanked last season or this one for priority draft picks?
    What about next year ??
I want some awsome recruits... How else can we get them ??
Could any self respecting coach actually suggest to the president and the team that we tank it for a couple of picks ?? or would it have to be done suruptitiously ??? (probably bad spelling but you all know to expect that by now - so please no reprimands)

This issue has been raised several times before around here, and the overwhleming response has been no - play to win or don't play at all.

    I'm on the Chandwagon!!!

If you cannot compete for the premiership, it's better to be young and exciting than middle-aged and dowdy.

I have no desire ever to meet you, but I picture you as a character that resembles Gollum/Smeagol. Am I right ?

i think that system needs to change so its no longer an option

maybe all the teams under 5 wins at round 16 or 17 compete for the pick/s

say there are four clubs richmond, hawthorn, adelaide and carlton in the same boat...they get the pick in terms of whoever can win the most games after the set round (in this case round 17) so teams always play to win

            just an idea... probably dumb
Theres not much left to say

We came third last year - why would we have considered tanking last year or this year?

By having the best recruiting staff in the competition. Low-numbered draft picks may get you first crack at the obvious young talent, but an adept recruiter can identify the less obvious talent so that they can be drafted.

Davey. Bevan. These two players are among the best first-year players in the competition. Yet neither player was drafted at the national draft, having to wait for the rookie draft. Now imagine if we saw Davey first and drafted him with one of our later picks. Where would we be now?

There is an article in today's Age about tanking. (I don't know how to post links). Geelong has asked for the priority pick to be abandoned. It seems to suggest that the AFL aren't 100% happy with what teams do nowadays but can't really think of an adequate solution.

I think priority picks should only be earned once a team has been down the bottom for 2 consectuive years (say less than 5 wins each season).

This would mean only the truely needy teams would benefit, and it would stop a team just tanking games from about round 15 if they were out of the finals race. look at Collingwood now. They have reached the last 2 grand finals, but unless they win another game this year, they get a priority pick, which is hardly fair on the rest of the competition.

The biggest problem with the priority pick is it rewards a team for one shocking year, not for prolonged ineptness.

Collingwood look like they will finish the year with just a win or two too many for a priority pick. What if they lost an extra game earlier. They could have easily said "Well, we're cattled for this year, lets get ourselves a priority pick".

That isn't meant to be a 'pick on Collingwood' statement and maybe they wouldn't think that way anyway, but it would be laughable if they could make the GF 2 years running and the following year get a priority pick.

A system must be worked out rather than a club gets a pick if they win fewer than 4 games per season, to one where a club gets a pick by winning say less than 15 games in a consecutive 3 year period. I mean if a side can only win 5 games 3 years in succession they would certainly need and be entitled to a leg-up, but under the current system they wouldn't get ANY picks.

EDIT: You beat me to it Sharpie. But I posted 7 mins after you. Obviously I need to brush up on my typing skills if it takes me 7 mins to compose a post. I think I'll take a secretary with my priority pick thanks.

I wouldn't worry too much about the Wobbles, even if they scored a priority draft pick they's blow it on a dud ............. probably with the surname Shaw or Cloke.

Haha, it seems you type as fast as some people think Benny Mathews takes to dispose of the ball. Maybe if we package the two of you together we can get some voice recognition software and a pair of Simon Black's quick hands on the trade table at year's end!

we would be bagging him and saying he should be traded for someone decent.
