To whoever from the AFL reads this board

From an email from the Swans Melb office....

The Game is not being broadcast on any radio station into Melbourne...
    No free to air.
    Radio would be nice.

Just so you are aware when negotiating the next broadcasting deal...

The game starts at 4pm Melbourne time, did any of you really expect to get full live coverage of the match from either the ABC, 3AW and 3LO and MMM??? I wouldn't have.

Pfft i dont think anyone was, if you dont like the post or think its dumb dont reply, think it was more a post to point out that its not good enough. Also for those unable to get to a pub with foxtel apparently you can listen to a call of the game through the afl website.

What can be done is this very thread.

I am not whining, cracking the @@@@s or slamming anyone or anything.

I simply thing that it is an area which can be looked at when the next TV rights are negotiated.

I'm sur ethe AFL wants as many as possible people to be able to access the footy and I am simply pointing out an area for improvement for them.

What has the TV rights got to do with radio coverage in Melbourne?

Well it's all a part of the bundle.
                  Everything is intertwined.

If it can be resolved before that, great, but the last time i contacted the AFL over this issue, they indicated it was an issue they would look at together with the TV rights.

AFL have stated that next radio rights will ensure that all games are covered.

Apparently some weeks in Melbourne one game is covered by all stations, despite two or three being one. Which is a stupid system...but I guess I can understand a commerical radio stations wanting two Vic teams compared to Freo v Sydney.

And just as a side note - it is likely the free to air/Pay TV spilt will be 4 and 4 after the next deal instead of 5 and 3.

Foxtel are willing to pay bigger bucks than Free to Air.

Also I believe next year SEN starts broadcasting live games so there are no excuses.

There used to be a rotational system where each radio station had first pick of what they wanted to broadcast then down the list so each game was covered.

The problem with the radio coverage in Melbourne is that since the current TV deal came into place, on some Saturday's there is only one 2pm match with the other being in Perth for a 4pm start (our time) thus the radio networks all cover the same game because none of them want to give up ground in the ratings to cover a match starting at 4pm.

As for Saturday Night matches, that really stinks because the time difference isn't a factor and therefore no reason why a Melbourne station can't cover a match in Sydney.

                          I can deal with that.

Like I've said before, it should be up to the Swans (and also in the interests of the AFL to do so) to give us a list of bars and pubs showing the games live.

They are living in a dream world if they think I will be paying $50 - $70 per month just to watch 7 or 8 games of footy...

                          It's simple really.
Email Foxtel or whoever, and tell them that there are people who want to go to establishments and watch the games.
They will (quickly) email back a list I expect.
