    What to do?

OK. I would have to say that the consensus is that Roosy is not doing the right thing in playing half fit players. You don?t have to be Einstein to work that out.

So what do we do now and which kids do we play? Which players do we drop? Which players do we delist? Furthermore, who on the coaching panel should be seriously questioned in terms of their ability? The other thing that has happened this year is a complete switch to a negative game plan/mind set and a complete loss of confidence in front of goal around 50m.

Frankly, with the changes that have happened this year I am amazed that we are anywhere near the 8. It shows that the standard of the competition below the top 4 is not all it?s hyped up to be.

To start the ball rolling I think that the following young players are the ones that show they would not cut the mustard as part of a premiership side (and that?s the name of the game isn?t it?):

    Delist

James -too slow, poor ground/player. Pity , because he?s gets A1 for endeavour.

Ablett- Too slow of foot and mind.

Sundqvist- He has been given a long time and his pre-season form showed that he was going to struggle.

Hunt ? Has not been given any plaudits at all. Going by this he can?t be up to it.

    Warfe ? enough said.

Players in the ?doubtful? category are:

Rogers ? would need a major change of attitude before he was ready for senior top level football.

Taylor ? don?t know much about him.

Potter ? What is the story, is he injured or just not performing?

MJ ? He is not quite big enough as a front line tap ruckman yet he has not been tried as a KPP. Like his strength and he is not slow for his size. Have the feeling that if he can?t make it as a KPP they should let him go.

Players to be tried ASAP are:

Dempster ?why the hell not. At least he?s on two legs.

Thewliss ? showed more and did more in the short time he was on the ground against the Pies that Schneider has done in ant of the games since he was back from injury.

McGlone- need I say anything. Bring him in for a game on a big ground where the runners have a better chance (Subi would have been perfect).

Powell ? he?s tall, he?s fast , and he?s courageous. Needs time in the side to develop confidence.

( Note that there are only four players in this list)

Players with serious question marks over them at present:

Schneider ? has lost all confidence and senior games have only made it worse.

Fixter ? exactly the same as Schneider except for the injury as well.

It seems that even though we are coming up against Brisbane we could drop Schneider and Ablett for any two of the above and improve the side.

In terms of coaching I think that we should be looking at the sports psychology of the place because the confidence in doing things they easily did last year has vanished. I will leave it up to others to comment on this area but it is not good.

Finally I think we should aim to do a ?Carlton? this year and turn over as many players as possible. It made a tremendous difference to them because they were able to pick up some useful players and get some positive change happening. There is plenty of ?dead wood? at the club in my opinion and if we don?t bite the bullet now you can forget about the next several years.

Taylor ? don?t know much about him.
Good to see some thought went into it before you delisted him.

Seriously, you just delisted 1/2 our youth.

I would be pissing myself if you weren't serious...

Obviously I have an open mind on him, as for all the players on the doubtfull list, but they need to be put to the test. My concern is that a lot of our "older" youth have not shown the talent that you would expect by now. Especially if you are really serious about having a list that can win a flag.

          Warfe
Of that list James and Ablett won't be delisted, while only Warfe is sure to get the chop. Hunt is a rookie listed player and is unlikely to have his second year option taken up. Sundqvist I believe will get delisted but will be picked up on the rookie list with a view do something simular to James in 2003.

Players in the ?doubtful? category are:

          Rogers
          Taylor
          Potter
          MJ
Rogers will go back onto the rookie list for next season after spending the year as a norminated rookie and available for senior selection. Taylor and Potter will more than likely also not have their 2nd year options taken up to free up space on the rookie list. With MJ he'll be delisted.

Players to be tried ASAP are:

          Dempster
          Thewliss
          McGlone
          Powell
I agree with you here. Doubt all four will though. Dempster, Thewlis and Powell will stay on the senior list for next season while McGlone will go back onto the rookie list and have his 2nd year option taken up.

Players with serious question marks over them at present:

          Schneider
          Fixter
Injuries this season haven't helped both players. Fixter is a slim chance for the chop, but I think both will be here next year hopefully with full pre seasons under their belts. To that list as well I would add LRT, a huge disappointment this season.

            Wow, that's a big call?

McGlone gets 3 years (plus a renewal?) and produces nothing . . . these two blokes have barely broken in their new guernseys and they get the chop?

            Seems a bit harsh . .

Appreciate your analysis Robbieando and it is probably what will happen for the most part.

Personally I think the high turnover option will result in better talent.

I agree with the idea to do a large turnover as something needs to be done to give the remaining players a kick up the bum and make them realise you have to make the most of it while you can because it could all end very quickly.Id consider trading\delisting the following players:Ablett,Fosdike,Doyle,Mieklejohn,Dempster,N icks,Warfe,Sunqvist,Powell,James????Oloughlin??? would need a very good player or high draft pick for those last two id think,ok let the bagging begin...

Schneider was brilliant last year and was tearing apart Essendon at the G until he did his hamstring.

You don't delist or trade players with his ability and class. He will be crucial for our midfield in the next few years.

Apart from Stevens and possibly Scotland, Carlton have only been able to attract tradesmen without any genuine class.

There is no way we need to embark upon a massive turnover like Carlton as our list is much stronger.

We should closely look at the bait Hawthorn and Richmond are offering as there could be some bargains to be had.

We lose two games against finals quality sides at their home grounds... and suddenly it's time to attack the list with a carving knife?

The 'delist list' is short, and that's a good thing. At this stage, the only players looking at that possibility/likelihood are Ablett, Powell, Warfe, Sundqvist and Meiklejohn. Presumedly, two or three of them will survive. Those who say that 'the turnover option will result in better talent' clearly don't realise how important player development is.

The 'trade list' is by it's very nature quite longer. Players that can be considered for trade, from where I sit, is everyone except Hall, Williams, Maxfield, Schauble, Ball and Goodes. The trading game is one where you consider the possibilities on their merits.

Also with delisting payers it also depends who is up for offer (to gain) and how good/talented the draft is. If you remember we delisted Monty last year but obviously there was not enough talent to replace him so we picked him up again as he was the best choice.

Get rid of James and Fixter? No way - I hadn't seen much of either of them before this season, and yes, I know Fixter was v good in '02. This season they've both been good performers and will continue to improve, fitness permitting. Of the others I would want to keep Doyle (needs time, but can kick, tap (although he needs to be more accurate) and take a mark (despite a couple of misses last w/e); Powell - has good attitude, is worth encouraging; and Thewlis. I don't know why Ablett has gone backwards from last season, perhaps a confidence thing. And trade Schneider? That would really come back to bite us on the bum. I assume we keep LRT - has not had a great season, but certainly has talent.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)
