    Sold Out???

Heard today from someone that knows that Sat. nights game is very very close to selling out.

Big big game this one, makes a mockery of the Collingwood game, this is the one that should have been out at Homebush.

After seeing this thread I had a look at the Ticketek website (I'm a member so I'm OK, but just for interest's sake) - the O'Reilly and Brewongle stands are sold out, but there's still concourse seats available.

email from the club last night says only 2500 left. Looks like a sellout is on the cards. IIRC Essendon Round 4 2001 was the last time this happened at the SCG. Good stuff.

If we continue to play 3 games at Telstra, this fixture should be there rather than the Demons

I agree. It has a better vibe than the Demons matches IMO.

It seems like more of an old "neighbourhood stoush" to me where there is some respect for the opponent, as opposed to playing teams like the Wobbles or S&Don where pure hatred is the driving emotion!

Maybe it's because we are both out of the comfort zone of southern/western states footy and so both understand what it's like trying to survive in non AFL surroundings.

The Demons match will probably draw more next year due to their success this year but it would still not rival the Lions.

Agree. Lions annual match is shaping up as in inter-state rivalry derby which fits in well with other QLD-NSW rivalries in RU and RL.

Long term the Lions game would seem the best fit out at Stade de Oz.

But it has taken the Lions becoming a powerful team and a final between us and them to promote that rivalary. Crowds for games between us and the Lions in Sydney have historically been low drawing games.

.. And part of the reason for the below average crowds in the past has been due to the poor turn-out from Lions fans. Should be interesting, with the team travelling so well, to see how many show up this Saturday.

I think a problem with trying to build up the rivalry between the Lions and Swans has always been that the two clubs have been trying to achieve the same goals, almost wanting and needing to help each other out in a sense that we both had to crack the dominantly non aussie rules markets.

Therefore in the AFL, there is a more natural rivalry between the Swans and a Victorian-based side.

As an example of all this, I think I am probably right in saying that the majority of Sydney-based swans supporters would have prefered the Lions win the last 3 flags instead of the teams they were playing. But in League, not many Sydney people would ever wish the Broncos or Cowboys to win the grand final, purely because they are Queensland teams.

Scarily, that actually makse complete sense.

The other factor in prior years has been that either one or both teams have been duds. But, that heartbreaking final last year and the fact we were the only team to beat them twice last year, and the 2 point loss this yr, would have had a lot to do with creating that rivalry!!

Probably a bit like the Port game this year, by us thumping them in last years finals, the crowd came out for revenge!!

And win or lose, they are, now, an awesome team to watch!!

I have to agree. The Swans/Lions will probably develop a good rivalry in coming years. I believe it won't be the hate-hate rivalry of typical football rivalries, but more of the sort of rivalry that would occur between knights at a tournament, with lots of mutual respect before engaging in hostilities. We are brothers in arms, after all.

absolutely right. i hate when people boo when brissie are running out onto the ground. as soon as they beat us last year, i was wishing lions supporters well for the GF.
