Our Back Six as Good as Any

What really impressed me about Saturday nights win was the
performance of our defence with Schauble back Goodes holding
his own at CHB and roaming up the ground we have the 2
strong bodied key defenders we were lacking a few weeks ago
Nicks Kennelly Bolten and Barry give us the flexability to match it
with any one in the league. I am feeling quite positive about
the next year or two if we can snare say Ottens or Mooney Tim
Schmidt and Josh Willoughby have a big pre season then that
premiership flag may yet be hanging from the harbour bridge in
2005. We must be positive and I hope we can get a parade down
Waggas main street to thank the loyal country supporters who
have stood by the club for years, and of course that long
awaited dream of all South Melbourne supporters a lap around
the lake oval. The dream lives on.

Would love Ottens at the club, but stiff competition from the Crows if Clarke is coming to the end of his career. If Clarke plays on maybe we could pick up Big Wetlands cheaply

Biglands would be handy has a bit of spirit and can mark I would
be surprised if Clark plays on he has had a bad run with injuries
over the years. cheers Ian

Sorry to shoot your balloon down, Ian. But there is a huge question mark on Shauble to last through one full season. He is playing now but was not 10 weeks ago. He could get on the park for only about 60% of the games in the last 2-3 years. I wouldnt bet my house on him getting through 26 games in a season within any hindering.

Goodes didn't play at CHB and certainly hasn't shown he is any good at CHB. He played up forward and in a mobile ruckman role.

With J Brown there on the weekend the game could have been quite different. If he had, then C Bolton probably would have taken him. However, powerhouse CHFs are probably a potential weakness for us, and Goodes is not going to cover that.

Certainly there are no
guarantees with Schauble but with a good preseason he may be
okay he is only 27 but a guy like Mooney could play at fullback if needed of course Geelong would not give him up without a fight

I don't want to start the whole Saddington debate again, but I'm not sure what we'll do with him next year.

Our backline looks pretty good except for another big-body key position player, and Saddo has shown he can't hold that position.

I don't think he fits in the midfield.

The forward line currently has plenty of options and doesn't really need another, who probably isn't quite as good as the ones already there.

Possibly I would see him in a Nicks type of role. Perhaps playing HBF freeing up Kennelly to play in the midfield, as well as occasionally being moved around where needed, such as onto a taller defender or into the forward line.

Andrew Schauble played every game, or thereabouts, last season and the season before.

I think you mean there should be no gaurantees with Micky O'Loughlin playing a full season, as he has struggled to play more than 16 games in the last 3-4 seasons.

What a ridiculous comment.

You can never run out of forward line options, as forward lines can become predictable, forwards get injured, lose form, get moved and currently our forward line players ( due to various factors ) has kicked 35 per cent less goals than last season.

Saddington proved against the Kangaroos in Round 4 when he kciked four goals that he can be another forward line option that is needed like a flag hanging from Sydney Town Hall - as the backline, bar Adam Goodes, isn't the reason for our dip in form and output this season.

Even though our forward line consists of mainly N.Davis, Hall, O'Loughlin, O'Keefe and Schneider when all are fit and firing, I can still see room for other options such as Saddington and recruits from other clubs.

As a case in point, this season only Hall and O'Keefe have been consistent options in the forward line due to various ( injury and form ) reasons. Two players consistently presenting themselves is not enough to be a top four team, hence the drop down the ladder.

If you put all your eggs in the one basket, they get smashed and destroyed.

Last year he played every game but in 2002 he only played 14 games and in 2001 he played 15 games. In fact only in 2000 his first year at the club and last season has he played anything close to full seasons.

saddington could be good trade bait though

i think he could try and improve his fitness and play in the midfield rotation even as a ruck rover. Just an idea feel free to shoot it down
