    Sydney Brisbane TV ratings

    Sydney
    ch7 - rugby: 401,876
    ch9 - snow white/deep impact: 304,670
    ch 10 - swans vs lions: 86,436

don't have ABC or SBS to hand, but apparently we were behind ABC all night and dipped below SBS at times.

The AFL should be really concerned with these numbers. At the same time 10 should be lauded. If it were packer or Leckie in control of AFL on Saturday nights there wouldn't be any.

86,000 people in a city of 4 mill ! @@@@ there was nearly half that in the ground.

Are we always going to be a niche sport in this city. Look like it to me. AFL even came third in Brisbane behind Wallabies and League(2 hrs delayed !).

For all AFL's arrogance about being the national game, it still rates a blip on the radar screen that is Sydney. To put in in context; while RU was well beaten in Melbourne by AFL, it still did a lot better than AFL in Sydney.

Enjoy saturday night footy while it lasts Sydney folk.

not great news but not a fair comparison. a game of which there was little hype, partly because we were expected to get smashed, up against an international test of the highest standard.

oh, and snow white rocks! (there are a lot of people who aren't into football of any kind and good luck to them)

Yep, very ordinary ratings. We were always going to struggle against the Rah rah, but to drop below 100K is terrible.

Brisbane got 155K for the same AFL game, and they lost, and have 1/3 of the people we have!

Although some plonker in the News Ltd stable was claiming that 300,000 was the break even amount for a saturday night in Sydney, which is clearly wrong, as even last saturday when you have two "events" bring viewers in, only 2 shows scraped in over 300K.
I'd say good ratings for Sat night would be 250K. We should be aiming for 200K.
Anyone know what we get when not up against the Wallabies? I have heard we've been averaging around 160K.

Be prepared for another bad result this Sat. as the Ra-Ra is on again.

I think it's a bit unrealistic to expect that footy will rate well against league or union in the city that enjoys it's highest patronage, esp for special event games like the bledisloe cup and state of origin.

Brisbane are enjoying the benefits that 3 flags can bring with their ratings and crowd sizes.

As long as it remains a requirement of the broadcast rights we will still get it. If TEN (or whoever) wants the southern state rights then that must also agree to wear the downside of Sydney.

We'll just have to hope that a few consecutive premierships boosts ratings a bit.

I think playing in opposition to the Bledisloe is one of the stupidest things the AFL could do.

Sure the game could have been moved to the Sunday so that we could have maybe gotten a roll-off effect from all the extra people in town for the rugby wanting to watch something new and different.

Once again an example of how the AFL in its Melbourne bunker doesn't really 'get' Sydney at all.

The AFL released its schedule a long time before SANZAR did with the rugby.

But surely they could have looked at things and switched a Melbourne based match to be the Saturday night fixture instead.

I'm worried about the crowd we'll get on Saturday. We should be getting well over 30000. We will probably get no more than 25000, as the hauds of people in gold scarves walk by.

This Saturday will be at least the third time this season Australia has played a rugby international on the same night as a Swans home game...

There was an interesting article after the Sydney v. Collingwood match at Homebush that said the AFL was not happy about the scheduling conflicts.

Unlike Union, we have three TV networks to deal with. To change a game would take a hell of a lot of negotiation.

                        Why bother?

I would prefer the swans hardcore to turn up in anycase. Much more enjoyable.

I notice the AFL have a blockbuster (Ess/Carlton) on in Melbourne Saturday night. Should be enough to give Union a mass caning in the AFL states TV ratings.

Which surely isn't a good sign for the 'national team'

you're so right!! and this time why don't we take advantage of the fact that all those heretics in their pagan yellow are absent and build a great big brick wall around the scg from the inside so no curious heathens ever invade our sacred sanctum again!

Agreed. At last weeks game against Brisbane, in the MA Noble there was obviously more SCG members than normal, and it killed the atmosphere there (whereas everywhere else around the SCG the atmosphere was fantastic). Those "big game" SCG members lack both passion and understanding.

Yeah but how many of them have watched the replay 4 times since sat night? Not many I'll bet! Admittedly, the ads do turn into a blur with f/fwd on .. but ..
