Roos reflects on toughest day

Selectively quoting from the piece:
Just to clear up earlier comments by some that Roos was not focussed on the job and could not set his strategies properly. Obviously he was, as indeed it would have been rather strange and probably pointless to have notified the coaches at that point.Roos said he wasn't aware what was taking place, and of the key off-field football staff only Craig Holden (development manager) and Andrew Ireland (football general manager) knew the exact developments. Roos said they wisely chose not to alert any of the coaches.
"Obviously all the players on the bench knew and the ones coming on and off the ground (but) I wasn?t aware until after I finished the game."
The impact on players may have been to perhaps half a dozen (the number is probably not high as Ablett did not return, Thewlis had little time, and so that only really leaves two interchange spots).
One would expect this did probably have an impact on team harmony and goes some way to explaining the lack of cohesion in the last part of the game. Whether team cohesion was alrady destroyed by the K'Roos comeback in the first part of the quarter and wouldn't have recovered anyway is unknown.
Doesn't explain the poor performance for all the players though.Captain Logic is not steering this tugboat.
"[T]here are things that matter more and he's reading and thinking about them: heaven, reincarnation. Life and death are the only things that are truly a matter of life and death. Not football." -
"I can?t remember exactly how many guys would have gone on and off the ground during that time but unquestionably the guys that saw it and knew about it would have had an enormous effect on them," he said, while unsure whether the drama affected the result of the match.Comment

Wasnt Ball rotated off the bench during the incident?? If so, that would have definitely affected him with the hand ball out of bounds. Concentration would be greatly effected after that.Doesn't explain the poor performance for all the players though.- Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in a world they've been given, than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact, it's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration, it's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing!Comment

Ball is the most interesting one. I thought much of his play in the last quarter was quite good as I recall. Took some useful marks on our kicks out of F50.
The fall and subsequent poor handball at the end was poor judgement, but who is to know how much that was just a stupid mistake he may have made anyway and how much of it was influence by what had happened.
He would have been most affected by the tragedy given he was said to be sitting nearly next to Wally when it happened and was apparently close to the family.
However, I think he was far from the worst player for us in the last quarter, even taking into account his mistake at the end.Captain Logic is not steering this tugboat.

Please shut up NMW
You won't let go of this will you? You are determined to try to prove that you are right. Why can't you accept that this would have effected players who knew significantly enough for them to lose concentration on the game?Originally posted by NMWBloods
Doesn't explain the poor performance for all the players though.
Roos said he had no doubts that the events taking place on the boundary line would have affected the players on the interchange bench and coming on and off the ground.
Quote Roo's
"Even talking to the young group, we grabbed some of the players that were on the bench at the time, it definitely had an affect on them no question.
"I can?t remember exactly how many guys would have gone on and off the ground during that time but unquestionably the guys that saw it and knew about it would have had an enormous effect on them," he said, while unsure whether the drama affected the result of the match.
"Your thoughts after the game are for Wally?s family, his two boys ? Peter and Chris ? who we have tried to look after as best we can so we are not thinking too much about the result or whether it affected the result at all."
Maybe, NMW, you should also stop to think about how bad so many are feeling at the club. No, noone expects you to feel bad as well, rather just shut up and respect other people's grief. Thanks.Occupational hazards:

I'm not trying to be right, I'm trying to do what I've always been doing - trying to understand what happened. When my team collapses I like to know why.You are determined to try to prove that you are right.
And I've already said, it undoubtedly would have affected the players who knew. Why can't you accept that this would have effected players who knew significantly enough for them to lose concentration on the game?
But how many players is that. It doesn't explain the poor performance for all the players though. See, do you get it? Some players were affected, some were probably not. Therefore, it doesn't explain the performance ones who didn't know.Roos said he had no doubts that the events taking place on the boundary line would have affected the players on the interchange bench and coming on and off the ground.
What? The grief of the people on this site? I'm sure no one at the club is particularly interested in what I have been posting.Maybe, NMW, you should also stop to think about how bad so many are feeling at the club. My dad's not really allowed to watch football because of his heart. I commented on another thread (and was attacked for it) that it definitely could have affected him.Originally posted by Diego
Hate to be morbid, but with us falling down on the field like we were at the 14th minute mark, maybe this affected Wally?
Lets hope not.

Re: Please shut up NMW
Why should he let go? Sure, we can grieve, but we dont have to suddenly stop discussing footy. We all now know that the game was lost PRIOR to when Wally had his heart attack. Why shouldnt we be able to discuss why this happened without having to disrepect Wally and his family by attributing his death to this loss? I think you should shutup and let everyone else talk footy. THANKS.Originally posted by cruiser
