Interestingly though, when I watched closely the previous two weeks Ball's ruckwork was very good. He tapped directly our players in the centre a few times. Doyle certainly gets his hand on it far more but I think Ball still has better control over his taps. Ball's problem is I think he runs out of steam during some games. Also Ball is still far better around the ground. Doyle should be unstoppable up in the forwad line though playing in the goal square. I'd like to see him rested there and just stay in the goal square for the long bomb.

Re: Lots of ignorant Doyle comment

Poor Doyle has been copping it a bit from the posts but while he can often be a bit ungainly at times I just think he is one of those unlikely "jinxed" players.
If something is going to go wrong it goes wrong with him.
That "soft' free against him vs Kangas cost a goal. Not his fault just a bad umpiring decision. Didn't he give a similarly soft one away in front of goals in the semi-final Vs Port last year which gave Port a bit of momentum before 3/4 time? I think he got dragged for it.

My frustration with Doyle this year and exp. the North game was his marking. He seemed more intent on Sat. of bringing the ball to ground rather than actually marking it!!! This seemed to happend too many times to be just a mistake.

I would hope if he becomes the # 1 ruckman next year that the responsibility will make him a better player. As #2 ruckman he may tend to sit back a bit and let Ball do it. Sometimes responsibility brings out the best in people!!!

Doyley has just missed a lot of football and it takes a long time to regain touch and confidence, especially for ruckmen. He will be greatly improved next year.

By the way, he is really starting to improve in ther centre bounces now. When he first started playing you could rely on him in the marking but he was regularly getting towelled at the bounces and throw-ins, not any more.He only needs to regain confidence in his marking to be a great asset (did you notice how he went the punch even when he was in perfect position to mark on Saturday?)

I predict he will be the No1 centre bounce ruckman and a great asset next year even if Ball continues.

On Saturday (from watching the tele) I'm pretty sure he lined up in the goal square from the start. He didn't seem to get in the game much...but was not mentioned as having come on from the bench. When the ball went to the goalsquare at the beginning of the first and second quarters (when Ball was rucking) Doyle was there. HIs opponent seemed to be Leigh Brown.

As I said in my long post he timed his leap for two contested marks superbly....he dropped both, though (one under intense pressure from Archer). I believe they will start to stick (just a hunch). He is a good kick for a big man...better than Cox, for example. Very fluid....when he has confidence. He put a 40 metre pass onto Bazza's chest that should have seen Jude and Benny drop their heads in shame.

As regards his bringing the ball to ground...well if it's in our D50, folks, I'll buy that for a dollar. He did it well several times on Sat (although when filling the hole he usually wasn't well placed to actually mark).

Nicks dropped one in the hole....GOAL TO THE ROOS.

How many times have people complained about Saddo saying things like "at the very least he should get the ball to ground instead of going for the pack mark every time"? Quite a lot.

I thought it was fantasic that he was disciplined enough to punch in defense. As I also noted we had a couple of crucial rebounds from his bringing the ball to ground. Considering that the Swans of 2004 couldn't buy a crumb in Hansel's forest, I reckon that this is pretty significant.

We get slaughtered at the crumb time and again. But who did Mickey crumb from to score in the first Q? Doyle.

Maybe, just maybe, this is not a coincidence. Maybe with his size you can rely on him to bring it down towards a preferred area. We have been crying out for this sort of simple footy.

Well I reckon big 'Fuse' should be given a run in the forward line this week. At TD he could cause some headaches for the Demons who would be forced to put Nicholson on Doyle if this happened.

This could give Bazza a much less physically challenging opponent and he would then run riot.

Doyle also needs confidence and if he could start holding a few big grabs he could get back to where he was a year or two ago marking wise.

At least he looked OK tonight - back to what he was a few years ago.

I think people forget how many injuries Fuse has had. BTW Ball was very good tonight as well.

Good call FL, he finally started to hold on to a few marks tonight.

Yes Ball was fantastic as well, and in the after match interview he was absolutely ecstatic, you could tell from his facial expressions.

Doyle was fantastic tonight. Whoever made the call on these boards to start him at FF was inspired.

Did lose a few hitouts to White, but white is the best in the business. Doyle around the ground was good. He's amazingly nibble, and can rover ok.

Probably Doyle's best game. His ruck work in the last quarter was very good and looked like he got on top of White. He made position around the ground on the lead and started to provide a tall option around the ground.

                        Ball was very good also.

Doyle had a much better game around the ground, but he is still hopeless at the hitouts - especially the centre bounces.

Yeah, he only had 23 hitouts last night. Our centre bounce woes are more a midfielder problem, rather than a Doyle/Ball one.

He did pretty well although White manged a few 20 metre centre square hit outs which always make the opposition ruckman look ordinary.
