Roos Vs Eade

I was not a big fan of Eades negative style of coaching, and i found Roos far more appealing last year. Unless Roos is just perfecting the chocker hold on other teams so he can unleash the Swans as a super agressive team who can suprise everyone come finals time, then i am a little saddend that Roos is following in Eades defensive footsteps.
So, it will be interesting to see how each coach fares from here on in.
Shall we give Eade a year to get his list together ?? Na he's had a lot more time coaching than Roos so I figure he owes Roos a bit of a head start.
head to head who's it gonna be over the next three year period ?

Seeing half the people on this site were going to slit their wrists if Roos wasn't appointed coach in 2002, what the hell do you thnk is going to be the response? lol

I hope Eade does well, I have a lot of respect for him, but obviously I hope Roos does a hell of a lot better.

Roos is doing the same as Eade as this is the game plan suited to your list. You don't have the dominant midfield needed to play attacking against top sides like melbourne and brisbane.

Also - Eade is a bit behind Roos in terms of rebuilding. Next year will be Eade's first, and for Roos, next year is year 3 of the 3 year blueprint. We will be expecting results that at the very least point to us becoming a consistent power.

Eade is technically already in front of Roos in anycase. He is a grand final coach.

They all end up getting judged on that.

Not really a fair comparision, looking at where both teams currently sit.

I wasnt the biggest fan of Eade but he is a great tactician I thought his problems were around the development and use of younger players. He never really managed to get the best out off the lists he worked with, this is probably Roos greatest strength.

I see Eade walking into the Bulldogs as a similar situation when he came to the Swans. He has some guns on the list and I wouldnt be suprised if he gets them into the eight next year as the older guys probably have a year or 2 of really good footy left in them.

If Roos had at his disposal Lockett,Kelly ,Dunkley and a Roos clone maybe a comparison could be made but he has a workmanlike team with few stars.I think he is doing a good job but he hasn't found the key to consistency.Beating top 8 teams and losing to lesser lights is really holding the team back.
I hope Eade succeeds at the Bulldogs as he did alot of good for the club.

No I don't think it is to suit the list rather to suit the lack of fitness and injuries to the list this season. Sydney has been let off the leash at times during matches to great effect but it seems they can not sustain it for the whole game and Roos is trying to limit the damage when we inevitably drop off.

eade is a good coach was pretty hard done by at the swans.... he is a good coach with a good footy brain.

a lot of what roos does would be influenced by eade

roos will beat head to head simply because he has the better side!

I have not really thought about it but how much of the side is still Eade and how much is Roos? Roos brought in Nick Davis and seems to have done well with some of the young talent. All the great current swans players are still Eade's aren't they? (Or even Barrassi's for that matter?)

Even last year, the Swans played the game in bursts. The main difference was that when they were in their "holding pattern" they didn't bottle the game up as completely as they have done this year, and generally not for as long periods either.

One thing that Roos has generally achieved this year is to get the team starting matches much better. Last year he couldn't afford to bottle them up in the last quarter because the team was very often behind. Thus they needed a fast finish to make up the gap. In some ways it is progress that they've been more frequently in a position to shut up shop in the final quarter, especially over the past couple of months.

The reason the team plays in bursts must be partly explained by the make-up of the team and the game-plan that results from the make-up. We are a pretty short team without contested marking options all over the ground. That is a major reason for the game plan that relies on a lot of running to create free men and to avoid kicking to contests in the midfield. It's a game plan that does take a lot of work (ie running) to implement effectively, which is one reason why the team probably plays in bursts.

The lack of fitness of some of our more skilful players - Davis, Goodes, Schneider, Williams in particular) is another reason why the overall style has been more negative than last year. Hopefully we will see the team better able to combine the best of the attacking and defending next year if we have a tad more luck on the injury front.

Getting a few taller players able to make contributions in the middle part of the ground might also help - Saddo, Doyle and LRT are probably the three most important ones - because it will enable the team to vary its "attacking" game plan a bit more and rely less on running the ball.

Cant compare them Eade was a brilliant coach at the swans getting us to the finals in every yr except 2 so im sure both teams will be very sucessful.

Good reply. I was sure they were not as negative last year. I will happily put done the "holding pattern" they used last year due to having a more inexperienced team.

In other team sports I have seen teams really struggle with tactics for a two or three years with a new coach then explode as a coherent team with many different tactical options. I would like to think this is happening with the Swans and in the future, any given night, the opposition could face many different Sydney Swans teams.
