This is a recurring issue. The problem with it is that it has the potential to bite us firmly on the arse. For example:
Which is the case (or best approximation)?
(A) Mark is homesick and wants to return to Sydney.
(B) The McVeigh brothers are as close as brothers get (without criminality), and just want to play together (in any team).
Now, if it's 'A' - fine, we can choose to take Mark or not, at our whim. Offer Essendon a 4th round pick, and let Mark take 1 year contracts until Essendon give up, (or alternatively, try to screw them entirely with some pre-season draft manipulation - "I only want to play in Sydney").
However, if it's 'B' we may have a problem. Say Jarrad developes into the midfielder we deperately need, only to decide he wants to join Mark at Essendon. That is, he decides he'd rather play somewhere else with his brother, rather than by himself at home. Now, that reversal of circumstance, has the potential to totally stuff us up, especially given the current state of our midfield.
So, IMO we should bite the bullet and actually pay a reasonable price for Mark - just to be sure. I don't believe Essendon could really ask for more than our second round pick (c.25-30) .
Is that really too much?
I don't believe that AFL recruiting has yet developed the sophistication to guarantee that Pick 25 will typically result in a significantly better player than Pick 40, anyway. IMO after the top 10-15 picks, the draft is largely pot luck.
BTW, IMO Mark McVeigh would be in out best 22. His experience would currently put him ahead of Ablett, Buchannon, Fixter (and even Bevan), and I'm certain he's a better player than Fosdike; very likely Mathews too.Comment

I just hope that if we do get him, it is coz he wants to come so that puts the pressure on the Dons to come up with a suitable trade, as opposed to us chasing him, where the dons could put the screws on us for a top player or high draft pick.
We need to get him as a bargain, but the dons have a history of getting good deals.Comment

trade with Essendon at your peril is a handy motto. At the very most is worth a second draft pick and that is debateable. If we wants to leave Essendon, it is a fair guess it is to go home to Sydney so the Dons have no bargaining power.LIFE GOES ONComment

Also, apparantly Jarryd came along on our end of season trip last season with Mark. Essendon were very interested in taking him but you guys got him too early in the draft.

25-30 is about right. If we kept that pick and got a player who could contribute as much as McVeigh in his first year, we'd be over the moon, yes? So what's the problem?
Essendon fans on Bigfooty tend to talk about Saddington, O'Keefe and Bolton. In each case, I can scarcely believe they say it.We hate Anthony Rocca
We hate Shannon Grant too
We hate scumbag Gaspar
But Leo WE LOVE YOU!Comment

What if we did recruit M Mcveigh and he wasn't in our best 22? Would we still play him?I think this is a problem faced by the Roos with the Harveys at the moment.Comment
