I can tell you now that not many clapped the boys off that night. The was a lot of "WTF happened there?" being said, and in the cold hard light of facts many of us apologised to each other for our negative comments.

Truth is that many of the blue-collar suburbs are heavily involved in League and call our sport GAYFL. But the popularity is growing, and slowly parents are enrolling kids in the less violent Auskick version of the game. Continued Swans success is still the only way to convert kids from Auskick to AFL, and we still have a relatively poor domestic comp.

Nevertheless, the mix of supporters in Sydney are not much different from some of the richer Melbourne clubs. Admittedly we aren't as feral as Collingwood, but we aint St Kilda supporters either.

Swans supporters at Sydney games ae very diverse and overall probably quite middle class. Chardonnay sipping is rubbish (c'mon, no one drinks chardonnay anymore - sauvignon blanc please ). No one at all clapped after the North loss. There was stunned silence and anger.

I was in tears myself mate.

Not a night I care to remember WS, if that's OK young chap!

Are we chardonnay-sippers, well we definitely do get a lot of the rather fashionable Paddington crowd to matches. Designer jean at day games, and chique mid length black leather coats. And infinitely more than at rugby league matches, the crowds are at least 45% women.

Why do the Swans attract the market they do; well I don't know really. RL is so intrenched within the working class west of Sydney that it is realy only the middleupper class north shore and eastern suburbs from which we draw support. I lived in Turramurra; there were always Bloodstainers on the train into the match.

I work in hyper-yuppie Balmain and Swans stickers on cars about the place. Yet in inner city Newtown (ferals paradise, I call it!!!!) the Swans are most definitely THE team to follow as well. So we span between Liberal and greens voters.

This is in STARK contract to our Melbourne supporter base. South Melbourne was always a pretty rough and tumble working class club. Games at the Lake were pretty feral I heard. Especialy with cans in the outer.

I often wander if some of the resentment about the move from the old South people was because of the artificial lardi-da strawberries and cream set image of the Swans in Sydney that has stayed with the club since its inception. I can understand why that sort of scene would NOT appeal to somebody brought up on beer and a pie in the Lake Oval outer.

I was thinking the same thing. No one drinks Chardonnay at the games, I tend to favour a Hunter Valley Semillon myself... ok ok maybe a young unwooded chardonnay

Most people, such as myself. stick with the Beer (no canoes) with some of the ladies usually drinking the house red.

The days of pink helicopters are long past, so the cringe element is much diminished.

Strawberries and cream is an acceptable dessert for Swans supporters because it's a food that's red and white!

The good thing about the North loss, is it made no impact on our finishing positions, and may yet prove the catalyst to galvanise the team to go all the way.

Thats from a purely on-field football sence of course.

I'm more of a Champagne Charleen than a Chardonnay Cheryl.

Those days are long gone - yes there is a huge number of Eastern Suburs types and those of us from "The Shire" but who cares where we are from, what we earn or what we sip - we go for the best team, with the best colours - now if St George can go all the way in the League - I will be even happier!

                          Cheers!

My theory is that Swans supporters are more 'middle class' than League supporters and also more so than most southern state AFL clubs because a lot of us have moved to Sydney to live from one of the southern states, and people who move interstate are often professional people who are more mobile job wise.

Of course, this is all generalising.

I utterly reject suggestions that Sydney based Swans supporters don't understand the game properly and do things like clap after losses like that nightmare in Round 19. Sure, there are always beginners at games, but I've even heard people at games in Melbourne asking novice questions.

All games in the OLD VFL were feral at the suburban grounds such as Windy Hill, Vic Park, Moorabbin, the Junction Oval, Glenferrie Oval, Arden Street, Princess Park and Punt Road - therefore the Lake Oval wasn't the exception, but the rule my friend.

If these so-called NSW Rugby League fans went to games at those mentioned suburban venues in the 60's, 70's and 80's, they would have thought VFL/Australian Rules supporters had just been let out of Mont Park Mental Institution for the afternoon. They ( Rugby League fans ) are wallflowers compared to those days, which have changed for the better in regard to facilities, discrimination against women etc etc.

The only resentment OLD South Melbourne fans have against anyone is the then VFL shifting the Bloods to Sydney in a relatively short period of time with no significant notice and little, if any, financial and moral support. THERE WAS NO RESENTMENT TO THE TYPE OF FANS THE SWANS ATTRACTED IN SYDNEY AT ALL. If there was, those fans are probably in the minority and are the type of people who are spewing that Holden kept producing vehicles after the HQ came out and when Billy Boy Gates introduced the world to the Microsoft PC.

I am rather chuffed myself that we have two cities of supporters that follow the Swans and am very happy that the Swans have upper middle class female supporters at there games in Sydney, due to the perv factor of these ladies, which I view between breaks in play during the games.....
