could be intimidating with the long slow "syyyyyddddddnnnnnnneeeeeyyyyyyy"
IIRC that chant was "born" the night we played the Toasters in the wind and horizontal rain back in r22 1996 so it would be appropriate if it were out in force on Saturday night.

Correct on the origin of the "chant".
remeber sitting in the bradman stand and being part of a slow building chant which was truly eerie.
this is why i dont beielve it should be used willy, nilly, only when the team is in need. (ie - not 5 mins into the first quarter)
Also remember the scoreboard operators got ahead of themselves during the last quarter and showed the finished ladder with sydney sitting on top, loud cheers aplenty for that.
I remember that game, Mum and Dad took me and some of my mates for my 10th Birthday.
I'd been playing Fifa '96 on the Sega Saturn, and I was amazed at just how much it sounded like an English soccer chant, and then Rodney Eade ended up saying the same thing the next day.

Ahhh the memories of sitting in the Berwongle concourse in the wind and rain and to hear the chant start up around the ground...even now gives me goosebumps

I was there that night. Around 32,000 people attended a game that was a sell out, in appalling wind and rain, to decide which team would win the minor premiership. I remember the first time the chant went round the SCG that night. I think it started near the bar at the northern end of the O'Reilly stand during the 3rd quarter when it was becoming apparent that the Swans were gonna finish the year on top of the ladder. It was chanted out of sheer joy, rather than panic. I still get goosebumps thinking about it. BTW, we thrashed the Weagles that night.

Sydney 12 13 85 d West Coast 6 14 50
But IIRC we scored some late goals including a special from Derek Kickett to seal it. I remember it as a very tense tight match.
I recall it still being very much in the balance at 3/4 time. Although we were ahead, there had clearly been one scoring end all night and it was the end we were defending in the final term. I was there with a Weagles fan and we both thought that West Coast were close enough to snatch it in the final term.
I think that the Eagles failed to score a major during that final quarter and Dale and Derek made it safe for us, kicking goals against the directional trend.

This was the first game of footy that I ever went to. I remember my two friends that took me who used to live in Melbourne saying they'd never heard anything like this at a footy game before.
We were sitting in the concourse in front of the Bradman. I remember a guy getting ejected from the ground before the game started. He set off a flare, and then rode one of the speakers cowboy style onto the ground (they used to have speakers on stands about 3m high all the way around the boundary). The first 2 games I went to we got to run onto the ground (2nd was prelim final vs essendon) You could have been forgiven for thinking this was the norm!

Maybe time is dimming my recollection of that game. I recall thinking that we were safe during the latter part of the 3rd quarter because the conditions were so bad (wet and windy), that I just couldn't see the Weagles winning it in the last quarter. I'm sure the chant was born during the third quarter.
BTW, was also sitting in the concourse in front of the Bradman.
PS Don't you just love footy finals time. I am almost too excited to work and keep logging on here to read and message. I'm bahaving like a kid rather than a 42yo man with a responsible job.
