    Stadium Dimensions

Does anyone have definitive dimensions for Subiaco, the SCG and Telstra Stadium (links if possible)?

I was under the impression that Telstra Stadium was barely bigger than the SCG, and would therefore give us an advantage. Subiaco's supposed to be huge, right?

But this thread has me confused:
Big match here at Telstra Stadium, there will be a huge crowd - Probably excess 60 k. Eagles have had a massive end of season run, they have won 8 out of their last 9 or something while Sydney have been okay lately. I reckon WCE will get up in this one, call me crazy but I reckon these...

The only thing I was able to google was this:

So there is a big difference between 'surface' and 'playing area' that may be confusing things to.

    Re: Stadium Dimensions

Telstra Stadium's site lists the venue as 170m x 130m (fence to fence) compared to SCG at 157m x 154m (fence to fence)

This site list all other venues

    Subiaco 175m x 122m
    Skilled Stadium 169m x 115m
    AAMI Stadium 165m x 133m
    Gabba 160m x 139m
    Telstra Dome 159m x 130m
    MCG 159m x 138m 99,000
    Optus Oval 160m x 139m
    SCG 147m x 136m

but then this site has different numbers entirely

It appears though that in general TS is very similar to Subi

It seems to me that the biggest angles @ 50m line (ie where it goes out) is a much easier kick than any other oval I have seen (ie less angle) ...

I am limited to Scg hbush, optus, t'dome and mcg - anyone seen subi, does it rake in like the 'bush?

I've had a good look, and I think that the list below is the most accurate. I can't confirm all of these numbers, but I have offical figures for the MCG, SCG and TS and they correspond to the numbers in this list, so it's probable that the other numbers are also correct.

        From:
        2. The Rules of Australian Football Huh? There are Rules? Playing Field and Equipment The Field Ground Sizes The Ball Players and Positions Player positions Purposes of player positions Player Uniforms The Umpires Scoring Starting and Restarting Play Marks Out of Bounds Possession and Disposal of the Ball Holding the Ball Rule Shepherding Free Kicks Kick-in after behind Play On Relayed Free Kicks Why are umpires 'booed' off the ground? What is the crowd yelling? Reports The Tribunal Appeals Criticism of umpires The Blood Rule The List The selectors Team selection What happens to players who aren't selected? Coaches and runners Trainers AFLX Rules

Measurements are from goal to goal and boundary to boundary:

        Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) 147m x 136m
        Colonial Stadium - Melbourne 159m x 130m
        Football Park - Adelaide 165m x 133m
Wollongabba Cricket Ground (the "Gabba") - Brisbane 160m x 139m
        Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) - Melbourne 160m x 139m
        Optus Oval - Melbourne 160m x 139m
        Manuka Oval - Canberra 164m x 136m
        Subiaco - Perth 170m x 122m
        York Park - Launceston 165m x 135m
        Baytec Stadium - Geelong 169m x 115m
        Stadium Australia - Sydney 159m x 118m

So, TS is 11m shorter and 4m narrower than Subiaco, but a very similar shape. It's probably six of one, for who the actual surface will favour, but them having never played there before has also got to have some affect.

But all this says nothing about the way the corners rake in ie angles ie subi could be round and homebush a rectangle and the numbers above could still hold

I wonder if there is an overhead shot somewhere ... off to google

Fair call. The term 'pockets' is almost a misnomer at telstra Stadium. They is very little depth to the forward pocket area.

This is one thing sadly missing from the AFL website but it's something that so many want to know.

It would be so easy for them to list the actual playing surface (boundary to boundary) dimensions plus a diagram showing the shape. Every venue would already have this information - it just needs the AFL to collate (most likely already done) and publish it.

Blame Telstra. The website is totally **** since they took over.

Maybe the HUN or the Age could do it instead.

Width and Breadth at max are not the points ..it's the minimum that is different ie a shot for goal on the boundry @ 50 is much easier at Homebush than anywhere else

Used to be about 2-3 metres till it was increased for safety reasons.

At Waverley it finished up being 10-15m once they realised they'd built the thing too damn big.

Monarch Field (Campbelltown for those who don't know it) seems to have about 30m from the fence to the boundary

By the way. No way in the world is the boundary 5 meters from the fence at the SCG. Would be lucky to be half that at some points
