We Get A Right To Vote

Channel 10 said we are gonna get a right to vote soon!!!
    - Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in a world they've been given, than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact, it's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration, it's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing!

In other sports news, the latest member of the Sydney Board Frank O Otyhead, has put forward a notion to trade the whole list to the West Pennant Hills under 12's in a direct swap. Mr Otyhead was heard to say "The under 12's have had a fantastic season, their winning culture is undeniable, the swans on the other hand, well I'm just glad that we were able to get some good pick ups for the likes of Barry Hall".

There was mention of it (members getting a vote) in the Swans mag that was sent out a few weeks ago.

Speaking of voting I received a survey (email) last weetk that the Swans seem to be doing on the SCG - why was there nothing on Stadium Aust in the survey, then I would have let it really rip. The only time I could mention Stadium Aust was within the"other comments" box.

No one seemed to care about the vote when we were dying and needed life support 10 or so years ago.

I don't need a vote to love this club.

SSI didn't get this - it has been around as a possibility for years.

When the AFL bought the licence back th the dark days of approx 1992, the infogiven was that once we had 10,000 members for 3 years running, and were stable, we would revert to a membership-based club.

Remember the voice-over announcements as we approached the SCG - that it was now a CLUB and we were all part of it?

The AFL and the club have dragged their feet. In some ways this is understandable. Imagine a Carlton or Hawthorn or Melbourne or Richmond style coup and how that would destroy the club in this fickle sporting city?

I know the board have been actively looking and pushing for it for a whil now. Whether it was due to SSI, whether SSI just sped up the already planned process, or whether SSI was irrelevant because it was hppening anyway, we'll pobably never know. Who cares.

Lets just make sure it WORKS. No knee-jerk reactions. Remember we're talking about a $25MILLION turnover "company" that basically breaks even each year. One idiot on the board leading the club off on a tangent will wreck the last 10yrs. We're 10yrs since (Sir) Barassi (well - he would be if we weren't so hung up on being a Republic!) stepped aside for Eade. Its been a very good 10yrs considering the previous 15-20. Lets not hope, but make sure we move onward and upward.

Whilst I am all for democracy, this sometimes worry me.

Look at the rabble that Hawthorn and Richmond are with their Boards.

As Pete said this is a 25 million dollar business, with over 15,000 stakeholders.

What ever happens in the future with the club, I hope that the momentum keeps on building and we just keep on getting stronger.

I think it's scary that the future of this club is partly in our hands. Who am I to say who should be on the board? I've got NFI!

Damien, please do NOT comment on things you know NOTHING about.

If it had not been for a group of supporters who give a damn AND a grass-root footy-thinking Chief Executive Officer in Myles Baron-Hay, none of this would have ever come to fruition. The club has been saying stuff like this since 1994, but the AFL I guess at that stage was reticent to open the club up to potential instability.

I can vote in elections at my local bowling club. All I want is to have a say in how MY footy club is run. So that we can rid the club of the faceless culture that private ownership has on sporting teams. It is the people that make the soul of a footy club. We are starting to develop a soul here in Sydney. Just like Tony Morwood has uncorked a genie or Bloods pride and identification with the team in Victoria. I just want my footy club to be a serious footy club like those in Melbourne. (Please not the Richmond minefield though, thank you!)

All of this would not have been positive if Myles and Richard Colless did not offer SSI a chance to put forward its case in person at the club offices. Whether our committee filled with barristers and legal eagles in the know has influenced the club in making this decision is something only the club can answer. I don't really care either way. As long as the club members get voting rights, I'm happy.

Our little footy club is finally starting to become settled in this city, for good! And I'm bloody proud of that, regardless of any involvement with SSI or no.

The people in East Germany also had NFI about who to vote for when Honecker's SPD was declasred backrupt and the Berlin Wall tumbled down. "Demokratie, was ist das?" That doesn't necessarily make voting wrong. It just means that people will need to be educated more.

I can understand your nervousness Annie and Monopoly. But I'm sure the AFL will still be monitoring things very closely as an advisory stakeholder to the board. But the fact that the members DO have say in how the club is run will mean instantly that the members will be wanting to stay informed about what is happening. Which I believe is a way to increase identification of the club within its membership base. "This is MY club; I CAN have a say."

OK, I have my personal opinion on a couple of things. I just want people who are involved with the club to live and breathe the club AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF FOOTY IN NSW. I do not like seeing people land jobs in our membership or marketing departments then push off after a few months because they see my club as a mere stepping-stone to their career objectives.

Maybe I live in lala land. But that is just the footy club I want. But I'm just me. And I have a sore leg, so better go to bed now.
