    Bevan finishes equal fourth

MELBOURNE, Sept 2 AAP - Melbourne defender Jared Rivers today won the 2004 AFL Rising Star award as the league's best young player for the season.

Rivers, who played 21 games this season, mainly at centre half-back, will play against Essendon in Saturday's elimination final at the MCG.

The 19 year old was the unanimous choice of judges and is the twelfth winner of the award.

He is the first Melbourne player to win the award.

Rivers finished ahead of teammate Aaron Davey with Brisbane's Richard Hadley third.

Last years number one draft pick, The Western Bulldog's Adam Cooney, finished equal fourth with Sydney's Paul Bevan.

Pretty fair end result. Melbourne must be licking their lips at the talented youth they have down there, I would be, not only Rivers and Davey, but a handful of others too that havent got the recognition that Rivers and Davey got.

Cooney shouldn't be ranked equal with Bevan IMO, Cooney should be ranked lower, however his last month of football was outstanding, if he played that way for the whole year, he would have won the award outright, and been a smokey for the brownlow.

Agree. Of any player in the top 10. Cooney is the one I'd have in my team (and Bevo of course).

I thought some of the press on Cooney this year has been pretty average for a first year player. I think he a class act
