As a 10 yo boy I managed to get standing room tickets to the 1970 first semi final. I was there amongst 104,000 fans (no chance of such numbers today) to see my Swannies in the finals for the first time since 1945. Skiltons first (and only) final.
As I squeezed my way to the front row just so I could see, I was on top of the world as Skilts led the team out through what I thought was the biggest banner of all time. This was my first ever final, and what a game to be at. The Swans were in the finals, and having accounted for St Kilda more times than not in the past, thoughts of losing did not enter this 10yo's mind.
How wrong I was. Suddenly things began to go all wrong, and I remember thinking, how this was so unfare on Bobby Skilton, but just when all seemed lost, South fought back and there was a real sense of "we can do this". At half time we led by 5 points, having one of those second quarters where you don't want the siren to go.
Unfortunately that was it. We lost by nearly 9 goals. Bloody St. Kilda stuffed up Skilts day. I hated them for it, and have hated them ever since. Whenever they have played in finals I have barracked against them. 1997, I was one out in the pub with everyone barracking for St Kilda. I was one very happy person when Adelaide got up!!!!!!
I know we beat them on the SCG in a final in 98, but that didn't knock them out completely. I want to smash them this week on the MCG. Repay them for ruining Skilts day.
For 34 years I have waited to expunge the memory of Skilts day being ruined. Friday is revenge day.
PS. I am not bitter and twisted at all
