A 74-point opening round thumping of Carlton was a perfect start for Sydney in their rebuilding stage. Midfielder Nic Fosdike knows it will get tougher, though believes the team will only get better.

?It was a great way to start the year and get the ball rolling,? Fosdike said.

?It was tight early in the first quarter, and then we just kept working and kept putting pressure on them, and even when we got to a good lead we still kept working at it.?

?Right ?til the last quarter you would see guys running hard and doing all the little things,? he said.

?It was the way we won rather than the fact we won. We won well and everyone got a lot of confidence out of it.?

Fosdike ended with a personal tally of 17 kicks, three handballs and one goal which he puts down to a solid team effort.

?A fair few of the midfielders got the ball which is good. We all worked pretty hard and that is a goal for all of us each week - to work hard as a unit and share the work load, and I think on the weekend we did a good job of it.?

Most praise from the former Norwood youngster goes towards the new defence.

?We have got a bit of a reshuffle there with Dunks gone, but the boys did well without Andrew Schauble.?

?Craig Bolton did a fantastic job of filling the void at fullback, and hopefully if we can get Schaubs back this week, our backline is going to be even stronger.?

?Leo Barry was fantastic. Rohan Warfe, Benny Mathews and Saddo [Jason Saddington] and just everyone down there was great.?

Sadly, with the high of victory comes the down of injures and news that Daryn Cresswell will be out for at least three weeks, and Stephen Doyle perhaps up to 12 weeks.

?Yeah it?s not great. Cressa is obviously of huge importance. He?s been one of the top midfielders in the club and competition for a huge amount of time and he?s down about it and we are disappointed too.?

?Doyley?s injury is obviously more serious and hopefully he can get better quickly and get back as soon as he can as they are both really important players to the side and they will both be missed.?

Fosdike admitted the team knows they have a tough road ahead, starting with this weekend against Fremantle.

?Travelling to W.A has posed a problem to some sides and it?s going to be a tough game.?

?They didn?t play very well against Adelaide and they will be out to avenge that loss, so to win we are going to have to be at the top of our game.?

Is it just me, or has Fosdike really bulked up during the off season?

It seems that most of our guys are physically stronger. They seem to stay on their feets longer when harassing and tackling oppositions. In contrast to previous years, they just fell down like chopped woods. It might be because of our pace or our confidence.

We are not going to win the flag this year so I would really ease players back from injuries. Playing under Eade is pretty taxing on their bodies.
