    Swans pass 20,000

20,291 members for this season (as per the Official site).

If we win this weekend I would say that we can quite confidently make 25,000 this year.

These are the sort of goals the club needs to set themselves. Nothing too big, but goals that can be reached.

Good news! I doubt we'll go back to the good old days of 92/93 again.. but you never know

177th Senior AFL Match - Round 4, 2009 - Sydney vs Carlton, SCG. This is obviously out of date. I suppose I'll update it once I could be bothered sitting down with the fixture and working it out....

The average crowd was well below 10,000.... but only a handful of those would have been members. In the early '80s, I think we only had a couple of hundred members in Sydney, and Melbourne was forgotten about.
        We hate Anthony Rocca
        We hate Shannon Grant too
        We hate scumbag Gaspar

Ah I remember the days in the early 90's where Melbourne had more members than Sydney but of course its a good thing to have more Sydney based members = more money

I was one of the few hundred members in 1983 and as
far as member benefits were concerned there were none.
In those days I could pick any seat in the Brewongle stand
with a good crowd around 10000. But it was still worthwhile
going to watch guys who played with all their heart and
soul. (Frances Jackson, Colin Hounsel, Mark Browning etc)

Apparently before 1996 (ie I guess in 1995) the club had a grand total of about 3,000 members.

                Ah Membership numbers

I always relate the story of how I purchased my 1982 membership ticket on the Friday night before the first round of the 1982 season. (This was the first year of being in Sydney)

I walked into the offices of the South Melbourne Football Club at the lakeside oval, and purchased my ticket. Too my surprise I had purchased ticket NUMBER 32. My true hope was that they weren't selling them in chronological order.

So we move forward to today's level. I believe that we should strive for a membership in the region of 35,000. This would represent 1% of the population of Sydney (or thereabouts). Not a difficult task, if the club is successful, and even easier if we are able to amanage a period of sustained success, and the easiest thing of all time if we become an AFL power. Nevertheless, 35,000 should be a goal that we aim for.

25k simply doesn't happen in League. Bronocs and maybe Warriors are only teams capable of pulling a crwod like that.

BTW 31000 last Sat was a very encouraging crowd figure. I reckon it was 10000 higher than the SCG would have been with the rugby on next door

We'll never get to that figure until there is a second team in Sydney. That way AFL will maintain a media presence week in week out, and two guaranteed big matches (derbies) every year no matter how either team is travelling.

You need the threat of sell-outs to kick membership along. At the moment there are no games that will be sell outs.

The club caps the Sydney membership at around 25,000 I believe, just because of the capacity of the SCG. So unless they find another 10,000 seats there, we move permanently to SA or 10,000 of those members are Melbourne based, 35,000 is not going to happen.

If we get back to winning ways, a full quota of 25,000 Sydney members plus around 5,000 Melbourne ones is probably the realistic target. And if they can sell a decent number of the SA packages as well the club will be doing fine!

Lizz there is no reason why we couldn't aim for 10,000 members in Melbourne, at the moment we have at least 6000 members (on last years numbers), so with a bit of hard work the club could get 10,000 quite easliy. However to do that attiutes have to change within the club.

I am fairly sure that they are planning to extend the SCG so that it can seat 56000.
Correct me if I am wrong.

If that was the case, then membership could be capped at around 35000.

Mase, I think that depends largely on the building of that "hotel grandstand" thing that was being discussed a while back. I certainly haven't heard anything since!
