    Latest on Freo match

Table-topping but level-headed Swans boosted for WA trip
    April 3 2003

Experienced duo Andrew Schauble and Daniel McPherson have staked their claims for a place in the Swans line-up to face Fremantle on Saturday night.

Defender Schauble (quad) and utility McPherson (hamstring) both missed Sydney's big season-opening win over Carlton at Telstra Stadium last Saturday.

However, Schauble, Sydney's 2000 best-and-fairest winner and McPherson, one of the Swans' longest serving players, participated fully in training yesterday, unlike forward Michael O'Loughlin.

All Australian representative O'Loughlin, who missed Sydney's entire pre-season schedule with knee tendonitis, ran before yesterday's session but didn't participate in the remainder of training and was considered unlikely to be selected this weekend.

But Schauble and McPherson's likely availability will be a welcome boost for Sydney following last weekend's injuries to midfielder Daryn Cresswell and ruckman Stephen Doyle.

Cresswell was expected to miss three to four games with a calf injury, while Doyle could be sidelined for some time with a knee problem.

An arthroscopy on Doyle's knee was deferred to next week because of a graze, and Swans officials were reluctant to speculate on the length of his rehabilitation.

But they did concede that the worst scenario would have the injury-prone 21-year-old sidelined for a substantial portion of the season.

Schauble and McPherson apart, youngsters Luke Ablett and Mark Powell are also likely to be considered for this weekend.

The Swans shifted training yesterday to a suburban ground on the outskirts of Sydney in an attempt to perfect their preparation for Saturday's match.

Coach Paul Roos said the Swans trained on Campbelltown's Monarch Field because it was a bigger ground than the SCG and, therefore, more similar in size to Subiaco Oval, Saturday's venue.

Subiaco was Sydney's bogey ground for the best part of a decade, with the Swans losing seven straight games there against West Coast and Fremantle from 1989 to 1997.

The Swans broke their drought there in 1998 and have won three of their past five matches at the West Australian venue.

While Sydney topped the ladder after their opening-round rout of Carlton, Sydney coach Roos stressed that his players would remain level-headed.

"I don't think they're getting carried away by any stretch of the imagination," Roos said.

    great article

the confidence levels with the players under roos seems to be level - headed as he stated rather than the up and down days of rocket and beeting a top 4 side and then losing to a bottom 4 side...

I think Freo will try and go for the jugular at the centre bounces. They will rely on their beanstalks (Sandilands, etc) getting clear tap outs against Ball/Goodes due to height, and will stack their midfield with Palvitch, Headland farmer/bell and bank on winning most centre clearances and exposing our backline with quick delivery.

So apart from Williams, we may have to go in with taggers in the midfield, play a permanent loose man in defence, and hope for rebound off CHB (Thank goodness Schauble is playing). I think we need to play BBB at CHF to be the go to man for that rebound, and look for ROK, Davis, Stevens around the FF line.

With a loose man in defence already, no real need for Goodes to drop back there so much, so can provide a target around the middle of the ground.

i dunno about taggers, itd be better if there were ball winners in there and then we dont have to worry about relying on our backline

stevens imo should be the loose man in defense

Playing Freo away the round after they are thrashed, AND having just lost Doyle and Cresswell. I think if we play to potential, we have the talent to win, and win comfortably.

On the other hand... Freo are definitely a better team at Subi, and we won't have our strongest side. I'd say chances are 35/65 Freo's way at the moment. (as such, I've tipped Freo after a long hard think about it... but I still believe we're a chance if we're switched on all game)

177th Senior AFL Match - Round 4, 2009 - Sydney vs Carlton, SCG. This is obviously out of date. I suppose I'll update it once I could be bothered sitting down with the fixture and working it out....

Well that comes down to the age-old dilemma of "do you tip with your head or your heart" doesn't it?

I would love for us to win on saturday, and I'm sure we are capable of doing it. However, I believe that Freo have the better chance of winning given all the circumstances, so that's my official tip. It depends on whether you think the question when tipping is "who do you think will win" or "who would you prefer to win"?

Of course, my tipping often goes to hell by the 8th or 9th round anyway, so that all goes out the window!!

PS: Personal tip - close for the first half, then we'll streak away in the 3rd, and let them get close again in the 4th before winning by 2 goals. But you never heard that from me

I think that Freo's season in their minds starts tomorrow - (I wonder at their effort in a game in SA)

I believe that the Swannies will win but as the coach of freo I would be telling the player that the season starts again. Look out for a wounded docker....

Have I been asleep? Since when has Doyle been the best player in the sqaud? No Doyle No swans? The way some people are going on about him he is the best player in the squad and our season is truely gone b/c he is out.

Yes he is tall and a great mark and kick..but we did well without him for most of last season (when roos was in charge).

Too me he is too injury prone and seems like an impact player. Comes on for 5 minutes scores 2 goals and then does he usual limping off the ground.

Wot!? You've just got the jitters now? I've had the jitters all week. I'll have the jitters all funkin' season. I tipped us to win, but we could easily lose. So much to worry about-not enough bourbon to help us relieve the anxiety.

I think this game is a toss of the coin. Whatever the result, I think it will say a lot about how both teams will go this season.

Can Freo still win at home? Can the Swans win 2 in a row? Can the Swans keep their heads after last week? Has all the talent at Freo meshed yet?
