    Need a good start

The hour approacheth and I am getting increasingly excited and nervous - but then I always get nervous before games.

The key has got to be a solid start to the game. It's an area the Swans seem to have addressed well this year but they have slipped back into old habits in the last few weeks.

I reckon the key to this evening is a strong, steady start to the game. The Saints seem to start games well - even against Brisbane last week they looked OK early. We don't need to have a lead at quarter time but need to make sure the Saints don't have a five or so goal break on us.

In particular, the defence needs to make sure Gehrig and Milne don't get simple goals early on. I reckon their early confidence will be key. If they realise its going to be a long hard slog their legs may start to feel weary and the Swannies should be able to grind out a victory.

We need to pressure them and stop their good start so the elements of doubt creep in early.

When I watched the Port v. Geelong game I thought the same thing - as soon as Port kicked a few goals in the first quarter it was obvious that the finals hoodoo wouldn't affect them in that game.

I've always thought that. Our best games, especially against top teams, seem to have been won when we've come out firing.

With the Richmond game, having both Schauble and Barry on Richardson worked and tied him up well. Would it be worth doing similar with Gehrig ?

I don't think it would be necessary because Gehrig is not fully fit. Rewoldt is more dangerous.

St Kilda's big quarter is the second one - they have won 17 which is the equal most in the league.
              We have won 12.

Brisbane defeated the Saints by 8-1 and 5-1 in the two second quarters the sides have had recently.

When we played in Round 11 - they won the quarter by a point 3.4 to 3.3

But if you remember we were down and kicked the last three goals of the quarter.

So a good opening quarter followed by a great second one is what we need.
