    The 2005 Team?

So what might next year's team look like at its best?

    Perhaps something like:

    B: B Mathews, A Schauble, M Nicks

    HB: L Barry, C Bolton, J Crouch

    C: T Kennelly, [new midfielder], J Bolton

    HF: R O'Keefe, B Hall, N Davis

    F: A Schneider, M O'Loughlin, P Williams

    R: S Doyle, A Goodes, B Kirk

    I: S Maxfield, J Ball, P Bevan, A Buchanan

    Others:
    J Saddington
    L Roberts-Thompson
    L Ablett
    J McVeigh
    N Fosdike
    B Fixter
    H James
    M Powell
    A Rogers
    J Thewlis

    S Dempster
    N Malceski
    S McGlone
    T Schmidt

The big problem putting this together was working out who to leave out. I had Saddington, McVeigh, and Ablett in there to start with, and I simply dropped them out for space.

What is difficult is that a few players pick themselves, and then the vast majority of the remainder of our team are fairly equal. Good in that they all should try harder to retain their spot, hence producing a better effort, but bad in that most are ordinary footballers - solid but not outstanding.

We have a few youngsters coming through, which is good, and if they are very good they will push out some of the ordinary players currently filling spots. If they are not, then the team dynamic will not change a lot.

Just to circumvent all the trade threads, and perhaps put them here with some parameters around them, what trades would we look for and what spots would they fill, who would make way, and how would we like the team to look?

I've said that we need two good midfielders and perhaps a CHB. I have one new midfielder in above, so who would I drop for the other - perhaps Schneider or Buchanan. Maybe even Mathews, and then put Saddington into the BP. If we put in a new CHB, then perhaps Mathews or Nicks would go.

    Saddinton Schauble Bevan

    L Barry Lewis R Thomp C Bolton

Kennelly ( New Mid - Bruce?) Crouch

    OKeefe Hall Williams

    Goodes Micky O Buccanan

    Ball Bolton Kirk

    Inter Mathews, Davis, Maxfield, Doyle.

    Ball changes with Doyle
    Bolton changes with Goodes
Midfield rotations would also include Davis, Mathews, Maxfield and Williams.

M Nicks would be used to cover injuries, Bevan has shown enough to be given the small medium defender role as part of his development.

Schneider must now be behind Buccanan I dont see any advantage playing these two together and Bucs is harder at it and has some flair.

Lewis R T did show plenty in his first season and with a solid pre season we should throw him in early give him the challenge, could also be back up ruck man

    Cheers

I think Goodes is wasted in the forward pocket.

I'd prefer Davis to play forward, occasionally rotating in the midfield. If he's fit and in form, I'd have him on the ground for much of the game.

i agree schneider has a lot to prove next year but to drop him?

you have to remember that when players come back from serious tears in major muscle groups (especially when a player is young) they might not come back into form for the rest of that season. that happens a lot in other sports and i have noticed it in AFL recently. it could be a subconcious thing playing on his mind, his fitness has obviously suffered because of the extended layoff and his confidence has dropped subsequently when that happens the first thing to go is skill, then vision and then decision making.

i dont think you can drop him because he failed to come back from injury properly. i think with a good pre-season and getting him back to fullfitness will see him back to the form he showed last year and earlier this year!

          have faith - i do!

Possibly Roos' biggest mistake this year has been playing a clearly unfit Schneider. Why? I love Schneider myself and look fwd to seeing him back to his 2003 form in 2005. This year has been a write-off for him.

I noticed in the stats in The Record for Friday's game that Maxfield led the Swans for inside 50s (and was also in the top 5 for rebounds from 50).

Wow, you must love Fosdike to have him in the team twice! Take him out of the Froward Pocket and replace with Nicks, then you might make more sense.

Based on your theory, we haven't given up much to obtain McVeigh.
