    Perhaps something like:

    B: B Mathews, A Schauble, M Nicks

    HB: L Barry, C Bolton, J Crouch

    C: T Kennelly, [new midfielder], J Bolton

    HF: R O'Keefe, B Hall, N Davis

    F: A Schneider, M O'Loughlin, P Williams

    R: S Doyle, A Goodes, B Kirk

    I: S Maxfield, J Ball, P Bevan, A Buchanan

    Others:
    J Saddington
    L Roberts-Thompson
    L Ablett
    J McVeigh
    N Fosdike
    B Fixter
    H James
    M Powell
    A Rogers
    J Thewlis

    S Dempster
    N Malceski
    S McGlone
    T Schmidt

We have an excellent forward line (Friday's conversion rate was more than acceptable- the laughably small number of times it got up there was the problem). Our defence is also a very very good one (especially with Keneally and Bevan able to go there)- its only weakness is against the monster teams, but I don't see why you can't play Heath/LRT off the bench (or swing Saddo into defence if we must), to guard against that.

When you look at the whole box and dice, I reckon Roos is right: a ready-to-play-firsts ruckman (in anticipated replacement of Ball- Doyle has shown enough in 2004 to indicate he can make it as a 2nd ruckman) and an elite midfielder to bring the rest of the honest triers above the pack, are about all we need. Because with this team's excellent attitude and work ethic, there'll be one young player in 2005 who is expected to be a mere fringe player who puts in a blinder of a year and becomes an automatic selection: see Schneider 2003, Bevan 2004.

As long as no-one quotes this back to me if it backfires horribly, I'll take a big punt from a long way out and say 'Sydney's 2005 rising star nominee: Josh Thewlis'. I mean, look at this stupid haircut: how could he not make it?

It will have to be a big pre-season. Some of those fellas would start to struggle in the second half of the season without one IMO (BTW can runners stay on the field for the whole game to push wheelchairs around)

Skilton? Overrated and certainly NOT captain material. P Kelly? Who the hell is that? I'm not having some singer in the team.

Couldn't work out where else to put him. Slowing down, so probably less time in the midfield - mainly in there on a rotational basis. Possibly HBF, but he's perhaps a little small for that and we already have lots of small, defensive types. He's very clever and talented so could probably manufacture a number of goals up forward.

Easy to say, but who would you drop for them?

That's why I drew up a team rather than simply talk about players in different positions and about trades without parameters.

True but he's so important to the midfield. Can understand your reasoning though.

Ah, but NMW, this stuff is all easy to say!

PS One possibility: Keneally down back, Saddo on wing, Mathews traded away as part of the midfielder deal. Amon (or Schneids if he's not 100% fit) would then have to miss the best 22 against a tall team to allow LRT/Heathy to sit around waiting for bad stuff to happen. Tough team to break into, though- I rate both McVeigh and Fossie (no flaming- this is a family forum!) but couldn't justify dropping anyone (apart from maybe Mathews) to squeeze 'em in.

I prefer Kennelly on the wing as he is quicker and a longer kick, so that means Saddo could play HBF.

                          Others:
                          J Saddington
                          L Roberts-Thompson
                          L Ablett
                          J McVeigh
                          N Fosdike
                          B Fixter
                          H James
                          M Powell
                          A Rogers
                          J Thewlis

                          S Dempster
                          N Malceski
                          S McGlone
                          T Schmidt

The big problem putting this together was working out who to leave out. I had Saddington, McVeigh, and Ablett in there to start with, and I simply dropped them out for space.

What is difficult is that a few players pick themselves, and then the vast majority of the remainder of our team are fairly equal. Good in that they all should try harder to retain their spot, hence producing a better effort, but bad in that most are ordinary footballers - solid but not outstanding.

We have a few youngsters coming through, which is good, and if they are very good they will push out some of the ordinary players currently filling spots. If they are not, then the team dynamic will not change a lot.

Just to circumvent all the trade threads, and perhaps put them here with some parameters around them, what trades would we look for and what spots would they fill, who would make way, and how would we like the team to look?

I've said that we need two good midfielders and perhaps a CHB. I have one new midfielder in above, so who would I drop for the other - perhaps Schneider or Buchanan. Maybe even Mathews, and then put Saddington into the BP. If we put in a new CHB, then perhaps Mathews or Nicks would go.

My 2005 /dream team at best would be

                          FB: Crouch Schauble Barry

                          HB: C Bolton Goodes Saddington

                          C: Kenelly Bolton Maxfield

                          HF: O'Keefe Hall Bevan

                          FF: Davis Micheal o Buchanan

                          Foll: Ball Kirk Ablett

                          Inter: Mathews Doyle Fixter Fosdike

I believe these 22 mwn make up our best.
I put on the interchange a relieving ruckman in Doyle and 3 players who can play in multiple positions either forward back or run through the midfield.

I was debating whether or not to include another tall buit decided against it.

Bevan(HF) Crouch (BP) and C bolton can also play through midfield.

Problems with this team is that Goodes is not particularly good at CHB and the midfield is the same as the one we have now, which is also not that good.

                            Where's Williams?

                              Yes, well minor mistake.

Much as I dislike Fosdike, I don't think he will be traded or played in the ressies.

Trade 2nd rounder for McVeigh snr imo.
