    Henson Park-(AFL pre-season) potential?

I went to the SFL GF today. And had an enjoyable day watching the local footy.

The thing that got my attention was the venue for the match, Henson Park. Sure it is bit delapidated, but the venue is a perfect natural amphitheatre for AFL footy. The surface on the grandstand side was pretty uneven, but I feel AFLNSW should see if they could develop the facility. And maybe even if they can have the ground and help develop it into being a permanent home for AFL footy in NSW. It has sloping hills around it and with a bit of a spruce-up, would be the perfect venue for an AFL practice match I feel. I'd be more than happy to see an Wizard Cup match played there if they could look at fixing the playing surface. It could easily hold 25000. Far better than playing a match at Homebush in front of 7-8000.

It is great that the oval on Sydney Park Rd has been done up for AFL footy. But had the grandstand been built at Henson, you would easily have a near-AFL standard facility, complete with lights and everything. The playing surface looks a tad small, but there is also plenty of room to lengthen it if needed. (Ground dimensions any SFLers?)

Seriously, the place was just a great footy venue. We lot Erskineville Oval to Souths Juniors. Why not make a claim to maybe do up Henson Park so that we can have a ground the Swans could use in the pre-season when THEY want (not when it suited the NSW Cricket team.)

How about a pre-season match there as opposed to at North Sydney? Thoughts?

Wait for Norris Lurker's pics from the game.

I'd say there might have been 2000-3000 at the game.

PS:- Here are his pix from the prelims. That will give you an idea of the side of the ground at the very least.

JF, I think they were lucky that the Jets didn't need it at this time of year and would be highly unlikely to rip it off them during the season proper.
        Not sure about that though.

Yep as mentioned the Jets needing henson park would rule it out during the season..but pre season I guess a possibility, but as you mentioned Julian alot of work needed to level out the field, not sure if the Swans would want to risk injuries on it, in its current state
