Aboriginal AFL Radio show to make it's mark in Sydney.
Sydney's sports radio listeners and in particular AFL fans are about to hear some rare and exciting radio across the city. Sydney's newest community radio station is 93.7FM Koori Radio and via "Koori Radio Sport", will devote one hour (or one third of the program) to Australian Rules.
"Koori Rules" will be an Aboriginal AFL radio show as Aussie meets Koori to form "Koori Rules" in what may be a first for Sydney radio.
Being a Sydney program of course, means a Sydney Swans flavour will run throughout the hour with the Swans games reviewed and previewed each week and much more.
We'll try to have at least two AFL player interviews each week subject to their availability.
Firstly, a Sydney Swans interview with a player, hopefully Adam Goodes or Michael O'Loughlin, if not one of their other great players and the second interview with an aboriginal player in opposition to the Swans that week. If we can't get an aboriginal opposition player, we'll try to catch up with one of the many indigenous people playing a role in the game or talk to someone in the game about an indigenous issue.
"Koori Rules" first show this Saturday morning for example, will feature interviews with Sydney Swans Michael O'Loughlin and the Fremantle's Troy Cook!
93.7FM Koori Rules listeners will also hear all the AFL News of the Week that affects or may affect those of us in Sydney, all the Sydney Swans News and information, including the Reserves results and the results and fixtures of the local Sydney AFL to keep the listener in touch with the grassroots.
So now Sydney not only has an AFL radio show to educate and entertain them, but it will be coming from a Koori perspective which offers a new and exciting angle for Sydney radio listeners.
Koori Rules Presenter Troy Garner says,
" I'm an aboriginal Big Kev at the moment I'm that excited! The timing for this show in Sydney is very good. From an AFL point of view, the Swans are starting over again on and off the field, their Reserves are back for the first time in years, the Sydney AFL competition is back on track after a few years of lost direction and even going to Telstra Stadium is still a new feeling! From a Koori point of view, well it's all new but I think the game here is more appealing to Koori's than ever with the Aboriginal Allstars game still fresh in the mind, the Harmony Day Community game just gone and the Marn Grook game coming up! I'm really looking forward to talking to these players each week because many aren't heard very much on Sydney radio if at all and I'm sure they are going to entertain and inspire Koori's everywhere! It all actually makes for a feeling of a fresh new start to AFL here and a momentum and growth that Koori Rules will be able to capture. "
93.7FM Koori Radio and AFL will be a deadly combination! Koori Radio broadcast the recent Aboriginal Allstars game from Darwin via the National Indigenous Radio Service (NIRS) and "Koori Rules" and the station in general will be an invaluable media outlet to promote the Marn Grook game at Telsta Stadium in June. The station may even be able to broadcast the game via NIRS.
93.7FM Koori Radio has been in test broadcast mode on low power and is currently only heard in the inner city but next month we will be boosting our signal to be heard Sydney wide and even further, giving even more listeners in the Koori and AFL communities a chance to hear the program.
