Insurance Picks

Sorry, couldn't help myself - another silly season post....

Now apart from trading for established players or drafting potential champions, a club will often pick players that are physically ready for AFL football but have had question marks against their ability or attitude. These are often 'insurance' cover while waiting for a young draft pick to mature, and are typically for key positions. For example Carlton drafting DeLuca and Mott to assist French in the ruck.

Of course for every Martin Pike there are a dozen Simon Feasts, but given our lack of depth in KPP and the ruck, would you like the club to go down this path?


Now what got me thinking was the VFL GF. Melbourne has 3 tall defenders (Lamb, Ferguson, Carroll) running around in the VFL - are any of them worth a 3rd round pick and would you be disappointed if the club used that pick on one of them?

Yeh, about $1.50.

Watched some of the VFL GF. Just a footballer.

Ferguson would be worth a risk looked really good in the final against Tassie.
Also Janovic from Tassie had a great year at fullback and was on Geelongs list last year and was stiff not to be in the VFL team of the year according to the coach

I thought Ferguson looked like a reasonable full back, lacks mobility though, which seems to be much more important now than in the past.

DeLuca wasn't really a ruck pick, he was just bloody tall. Apparently he never played ruck for Port Melbourne in the VFL last year, just CHF and CHb. Pagan tried him in the ruck due to his size, but I can't see him holding down the tap-out spot long-term. Hopefully either Mott gets his head right , or we trade for a solid ruck who's not getting a decent go at their club, ala Jolly/Jamar.

Yea great, maybe for another team. There is only one place in the team as it is for another player. We do not have any room for players like this. Anyway I would rather lose games with The Hyphen at CHB then lose games with some no-potential player at CHB.
