    Geelong to trade Spriggs

Geelong have told Spriggs that they will try and find a new home for him in the up and coming trade period, the two favourites for his service at the momment are Collingwood and Sydney according to footygoss.com Spriggs would be happy to play for any of the two clubs but at this point has not heard from iether club.

Thoughts? for me I would love to have him at the Swans again it comes down to the trade, I dont feel he would command a hell of a lot of money and would be at this stage of his career looking to get a regular game ahead of silly demands.

If I'm thinking of the right guy, I reckon he is a complete dud.

Has poor disposal of the football, we really don't need his type.

          Is it 1999-2001 again?

We need one or two genuine quality players. Not four or five middle-rangers.
          We hate Anthony Rocca
          We hate Shannon Grant too
          We hate scumbag Gaspar
          But Leo WE LOVE YOU!

Spriggs looked like being real quality until he suffered a knee injury . . has been in and out of the seniors since then.

He was very, very fast, and a good ball-winner at stoppages . . . he would be worth the risk if the price is right.

I have a half recollection that he was BOG in a TAC Grand Final not too long ago?

Given that we don't really have any "duds" getting a regular senior game and have a fair number of youngsters who are NQR at the moment but deserve more time to develop their wares, I hope we wouldn't go for a Spriggs. I rather see opportunities - both in terms of spots on the list and senior games - given to Bevan, Schneider, Buchanan, Davis Jnr, Dempster, McVeigh, Willo Jnr, Schmidt etc

He'd probably be a decent pick-up for a club like Carlton last year that has had a huge clean-out and needs to fill some spots on its list with cheap but senior-ready players. Richmond maybe?

There my thoughts as well, also coupled with the fact that he is an attacking midfielder/wingman who likes to take on his opponents, yes his disposal can let him down but hes the type of player we need to get a better mix next year if we want to play a more enterprizing brand of football we need the players who can atleast play that brand of football. Its all an well to targert stars of the game but what do they cost you? I feel at the RIGHT price he could add another dimension to our game.

I agree with what you are saying to a degree but I feel of that list only McViegh fits the bill as a aggresive/attacking midfielder, the others like Buchanan are guys who could be good workers around the ball ala Peter Bell and play in the pockets and the types like Bevan are tough nuts with more utility stamped over them then true midfielder. This is why Spriggs has caught my eye say over say Mcviegh from Essendon because I believe he offers something we dont have apart from our two ageing vets in Maxfield and Williams.

He is soft. Would need a complete transformation to be compatible with the types that Roos is developing. Doesn't seem to want anyone who does not have a bit of grunt.

Some of our existing players already can play a more attacking role, or at least have shown signs of it.

Crouch, for example, was playing a pretty offensive role early in the season. He seemed to drop off in the second half of the year, but I'm not sure whether this was because the team got bogged down in the ultra-defensive stuff or because he was struggling on a personal level.

If Schneider can get himself fit enough, I see him as a pretty offensive type midfielder. I see a lot of similarities between him and Williams.

Ablett, Bevan and Buchanan are others who have a decent turn of speed on them. They still need to develop fitness and confidence but any one of them may be capable of playing an attacking role through the midfield.

I'm not saying we shouldn't be trying to target a player clearly capable of playing this role. After all, there are still question marks over all our younger players. But Spriggs is probably a poor man's Fosdike - not exactly what we need to add to the squad.

Schneider has similarities to Williams??? Boy that is drawing a long bow. For a starter Wiiliams kicked both feet, could avoid tackles and hit players on the chest monotonously. He also didn't go to ground and won the hard ball.

He had great stamina, played instinctively, was a professional and obviously prepared himself to play in all ways.

Schneider has a long, long, long way to go just to have the honour of cleaning William's boots.

Which Williams are we all talking about? I thought Liz was referring to the Williams we have on the list now.

To clarify, I am talking about Paul Williams, not Greg.

And yes, he has a long way to go to get close to how good a player Williams is.

But, put aside this year when he wasn't ever close to match fit and recall some of the glimpses he showed last year.

Schneider has explosive acceleration, likes to carry the ball and can break the lines. He's a similar height and body shape, allowing for the differences between a 19yo and a 30yo. I suspect Williams is a player who's had to work hard to keep his body fat down. He also has a booming kick.

If Schneider can overcome his current deficiencies (mostly fitness related), I can certainly see him playing in a similar way to Williams a few years down the track.
