    we r better than melbourne

i was watching fox league teams and what struck me is that we have a better list than the dees, easily...

i thought we have troubles in the backline, there whole backline is reliant on lamb, bizzell and ferguson. 3 very skinny, relatively short and very inexperienced players.

our midfield is better than theirs, shown by our complete dominance of the midfield late last year

and our forward line is very similar to theirs

    ie
    neitz - hall
    vardy - nicks
    robertson - micky o
    green - davis
    armstrong - schneider

    etc etc

i think roosy is a more proficient coach than daniher

so, y are we picked below melbourne

the melbourne journos have no idea and wherever they pick melbourne they should put us one spot above them on the ladder

Interesting comparison, and put that like it does raise the question.

However, I think some of the reasons why others might assess the two teams differently are:

    1 Hall vs Neitz -

For some reason most Melbourne pundits would rate Neitz much more highly than Hall. If you look at the various journos top 50 players lists, Neitz is placed considerably higher than BBB. He won the Coleman last year and, I guess, has been kicking goals more consistently than Hall over a longer period. The fact that there was very little difference between the two player's average goals per game last season seems to have been ignored. However, last season was Hall's best ever and he probably has to do it again this season before he gets the recognition. The signs are definitely there that he will though. I also suspect that even Hall doesn't realise how good he can be.

    2 Midfield

I'm not sure it's clear cut that our midfield is better than Melbourne's. Sure, we cut them apart there last season, but equally their midfield cut apart other teams that ours struggled against.

    3 Coaches

Too early to say that Roos is better. Daniher has coached a team to a GF and to a few other finals series. Roos has thus far won 7 games, most of them against lowly opposition. Maybe Roos is a better coach but he still has to prove it.

I love your optimism, Penga. You always come up with something different to think about!

With Hall and Neitz, I think Hall is as good as any forward going around at the moment. But Neitz adds more to his team - as well as his leadership role, he is arguably the best CHB in the comp. Until quite recently, Daniher has been very reluctant to let Neitz play as a permanent forward because of his overall importance to the team.

Re Roos, I think he's still in probation mode. But I thought he earned a lot of respect with his coaching against Melbourne at the end of last season. The Dees were rampant at that stage, and should have killed us. But Roos' tactics, particularly the neutralising of Neitz, were masterly, and could be the blueprint used by many clubs for the Dees downfall this season.
