    Notting Better Then Bruce

    He showed it today in a Grand Final.

    Ottens and Notting would be a fantastic coup for the club (assuming of course that Ball is not up for grabs anyway).

      Yep - I just wrote that in the other thread. Notting would be a spectacular addition to our midfield!!

          I think I'd prefer Simmonds and Notting. That would make me very happy, especially if we emerge out the other side with Tiger and Pebbles in tact.

                      Or maybe Dermott Brereton's comment on Ch 9 circa 1999-2000 that Tim Notting will " be the best CHF in the AFL in 3-4 years " has you believing that Notting is a better footballer than Cam Bruce ?!

                      As I have said before, Cam Bruce kicked over 30 goals this season alternating between Half Back, on the ball and Half Forward, in addition to averaging 20 odd possies a game whereas Notting was too inconsistent, receives a lot of easy possies through their star midfield brigade and struggles to have a consistent impact on games.

                          How could anyone possibly think Notting is going to make a CHF!?!

                          Bruce plays a full game whereas Notting only plays 3/4 usually.

                          Watch Notting play and you'll see he doesn't simply get easy possessions, and when he does get the ball he does a lot with it.

                          Bruce managed 19 possessions per game plus 34 goals playing full games.

                          Notting managed 12 possessions per game plus 27 goals playing 3/4 games.

                              Very good with stats there NMWBloods, maybe you should also find out how much of Bruce's game time was played on the Half-Back flank ?!

                              If Bruce played exclusively in the forward line with occasional runs on the ball, he would've kicked over 50 goals this season and the debate between Notting and Bruce would not have been brought up - due to Bruce clearly being the dominant footballer and consequently better value to the Swans if picked up through trading this post season !!

                              Notting had ample opportunity to impress and stand up this season due to a plethora of injuries at the Lions, therefore the factor of only playing 3 quarters of games is insignificant in this instance.

                                  Bruce plays half back and half forward, but Notting plays on the wing and occasionally half forward.

                                  Where was Notting going to gain more game time in the Lions' side?

                                  Akermanis played all 25 games
                                  Black played all 25 games
                                  Copeland played all 25 games
                                  Hart played 21 games
                                  Lappin played all 25 games
                                  Pike played all 25 games
                                  Power played 24 games
                                  Voss played 24 games

                                  Naturally he's going to get on the field after those guys. Who is Bruce going to be behind at Melbourne?

                                  How many goals Bruce would have or did kick as a permanent HFF is not really relevant in this discussion about midfielders.

                                  BTW - have a look at Notting's grand final - 90 minutes, 18 possessions, 3 goals. One of the better players on the ground.

                                          Similarly, Bruce's first three quarters of the year should not be used to judge him overall.

                                          Notting plays very well when the chips are down, and has been given less opportunity to develop. He has experience and a cool head... do people forget the last time we played and he almost single-handedly wrested it back in their favour (heck it seems to happen every time we play them).

                                          Bruce has had one (almost) good year and people are overrating him at this stage. At least one more year to convince me he is worth the money (which is probably more than Notting anyway with the level of interest in him).

                                              The GF was mentioned as it was simply the most recent game, not because it is the sole evidence that Notting is a good player.

                                              I also think Bruce is a very good player too and would be happy with either, or even better, both!!

                                              You'd be hard pressed saying one was significantly better than the other though.

                                                  it's extremely unlikely that Brisbane will be releasing Notting at the end of the season given their retirements and aging list

                                                  I think he is a good player but highly overrated on this board, more of an impact player than a fully fledged midfielder

                                                      I don't think he's highly overrated (he's better than any of our midfielders currently but not a superstar like S Black).

                                                      I also think there is a good chance that Bruce won't leave Melbourne, so we'll need to find our midfielder elsewhere.

                                                          Better than AA and two times club champion Paul Williams? Or AA and 4th in the Brownlow Brett Kirk?

                                                          I like Notting and would be very happy if the Swans could snare him but comments that he's better than any of our midfielders are, IMHO, daft.
