Peter Hatley recognised by the Swans

Peter Hatley was last night presented with an award recognising his efforts. Unfortunately he chose not to make a speech or even to lead us all in a cheer. He is now an official part of Swans history.

I can't remember the title of the award - it was quite long - but it will be an annual award from now on.

I was thrilled for him. And even more happy that these days there seems to be a considerable effort to recognise the little people in the club. That is what makes a football club into a family, the fact that volunteers and supporters who do alot for the team they love get firstly recognition then respect for what they do. The clap the Cheer Squad got for our efforts was again very much appreciated.

We ARE really starting to turn into a real footy club. We still have a fair way to go in places. But we sure are on the right track.

It was both an honour and a surprise to be recognised last night. For those that don't know, I was awarded the Inaugural John Yates Award for significant contribution to the promotion and development of the Syney Swans and AFL in NSW. Part of that would be my 15yrs umpiring Junior footy, as well as my "antics" on the wing and 35,000km driving to EVERY match this year (I realised yesterday that it is slightly more than Sydney to London and return!).

There's a number of people who deserve to be recognised for the hard work they put into this club, from making banners to strapping ankles etc. But it is fantastic for the club to recognise the "little people". As I said to a couple of the board members after the band finished last night, it is what differentiates a Club from a Franchise. The way we ALL feel we have ownership of the Club.

No longer is our Club an us & them, or a haves & have-nots (ie suits & fans). Mayber it never was, but it gave that impression to some people a few years ago. The Board and Staff know (and talk to!) the members and vice-versa. We all have different roles within the club. SOme behind glass, some not. But we ALL play a role, and we are ALL inter-connected in building the success of this club.

People like Tony Morwood and Myles Baron-Hay have made a huge difference to this club. It's not only them of course, but there seems to have been marked change within their time at the reigns. Members of the Board have a chat with you, about many things (good and bad!). Its how a footy club SHOULD be. Last night's award was a part of that recognition of us "rank & file supporters".

It is a great honour not only to receive it, but to be the FIRST to receive it!

Well done Peter! I knew your face from the crowd long before I came on the messageboard, and it's nice to know that people as dedicated as you get the recognition that you deserve.

                  Thanks for the congrats Cher

John used to be on the NSWAFL Commission I believe. I had heard the name before from football circles up here.

Congratulations Peter - and well-deserved. How's your car holden up?
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)
