    National/Rookie Draft - Ed Clarke

From Footydraft.com (Public website, not commercial).

    Ed Clarke
    Details:
    Club: North Shore/NSW
    DOB: 11 June 1986 Hgt: 178cm Wgt: 91kg
    Position: Ruck Rover
    Natural Foot: Right

    Honours:
    New South Wales 2003, 2004
MVP on New South Wales 2004
    All Australian 2004
    State Screening Camp 2004

Strengths: Clarke is a powerful centreman who is 91kg of muscle. He is one of the best performed players in underage football this year, having dominated in the under 18 carnival, gathering 10 Morrish Medal votes in 4 games, then winning the MVP in Allies v Victoria game.

He is a freak at the stoppages, just constantly wins the ball out of the centre and pumps it forward. He is also extremely dangerous in front of goal, kicking 6 in the final carnival match. Is a long kick and has clean hands. Also a good leader and strong in the hips. Tackles very hard.

Weaknesses: Clarke's body strength compared to the other kids at this level gives him a massive advantage. Probably has little scope for improvement and lacks pace. Can get the blinkers in front of goal.

Footydraft.com comment: What to do? What to do? This guy is a man playing in a kids comp, but boy can he play. His body shape is all wrong and for every Sam Mitchell there is a David Kellett or Daniel Elstone who hasn't made it. Definitely worth a rookie list at the VERY least, but I think clubs will be too wary to draft him.

I remember when I umpired him in u14 (playing for Willoughby), he was solid then! 13yrs old, playing in the u16 and built like the proverbial even then. The good thing was, he used his bulk to win the ball, NOT to belt people.

Being a Sydney local it would be great to get him on the rookie list, throw him in & see what he can do.

It still perplexes me as to why clubs would be wary to draft a ready made, when they are prepared to draft a skinny kid and not play him for 2 years on the basis that he might develop.

because a skinny kid dominating at junior level has more scope for improvement whereas a developed kid may not be able to match it in the afl when he does not have the size advantage over his opponents

I think he could give Byron Pickett a run for his money. If there's anyone likely to clean up Pickett, it's probably a bloke like Clarke.

              Couldn't agree more.

Players like Voss and Buckley were never skinny at junior level.

You get the occasional freak like Kel but it is very very rare that skinny kids add enough bulk to make them a gun.

Fosdike v Jude Bolton is the perfect example. Bolton always had the better footy body and it's showing now.

I'm worried that McVeigh will be in the Fosdike mould.

Wasnt Clarke placed on the Supp list for the day visit for the Draft Camp r was he skipped all together? Only Shaw and Bartlett are going to Camp, but if hes made screening it means another club is interested in him....
                - Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in a world they've been given, than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact, it's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration, it's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing!

I think it goes as follows according to my contact at Carlton.

If they miss the draft camp and a player has been nominated a number of times on club wish lists (I think 5) then they go into State Screening. Seems to be some discretion on this figure, but general consensus appears to be if a name figues prominently in noms he will get the nod at state level.

What happens is that they do similar tests to the draft camp and all clubs get a copy of results. The big difference is clubs don't get to do player interviews at state screening.

I think you only need to have been nominated by one club to be invited to the State Screening.
