Three Youngsters to Watch in 2005

Sorry that I made it so hard to read.

I am still in the Reserves trying real hard to make 1st Grade in the way that I present my postings.

Will accept any suggestions as to how I can make any future postings easier to read.

    Cheers Ian

Oops - I think you hit post new thread instead of post new reply - I do that quite often too!!

As I wanted to read this, and I'm sure others do too, I edited it as I read it:

I have followed with interest some of the players you have been predicting to have an impact in 2005. The 3 players I believe will progress quite a bit in 2005 are Willoughby, Dempster and Schmidt.

I have had a close look at them when I have been able to see them play this year - sadly not as often as I would have liked - and as well I've been checking on what I can find about their junior careers.

Josh Willoughby was the joint winner of the Mclean medal, finishing level with Tim Schmidt in the Australian under 16 carnival. In 2003 he was an all Australian again at under 18 level. Good judges in Sth Australia rated his kicking and disposal skills the equal of Darren Jarman at the same age - not a bad wrap.

When he played in Wagga a couple of months ago I noticed he had already begun to put on some muscle. With a good preseason I expect him to make an impression next year. Dempster is interesting - he was a late starter and he has taken some time to develop. He turns 21 in January and with 2 seasons in the reserves behind him he is physically ready to go. He is good in the air, can run all day and is a booming kick. Next year will make or break him and I am predicting he will be the real surprise packet in 2005.

Quickly on Tim Schmidt, don't be fooled by his build - he has all the skills and he is an in and under midfielder. Reminds me a lot of Greg Williams and his build was no barrier to him. He will need a big preseason as he was troubled by hamstrings during the year, but mark my words this guy can play.

Guys sorry this is so long but I wanted to back up my statement with some information.

    Cheers Ian.

Excellent - thanks for the update Ian!

These guys sounds really promising and I look forward to seeing them play, hopefully next year!!

With Schneider, Buchanan, McVeigh, Bevan and even Davis and Goodes potentially competing to play in the midfield full-time this season means that guys like Willoughby, Schmidt and Dempster will have a very hard time cracking into the squad in 2005.

However, I hope the Swans continue the trend with one new "from out of nowhere player" (Bevan 2004, Schneider 2003) and one developing player (McVeigh 2004, Hyphen 2003) in the squad in 2005.

At this stage I would guess M. Davis as the breakout player and Willoughby to be the developing one. But...

One impression I have had from watching Dempster in the magoos is that as well as a huge kick he has the priceless asset of "sticky fingers". If he continues his development and does well in the pre season we will see him in the ones at some stage next year for sure.

Dempster's got to be sick of being an emergency. Although he's not the first for us. It seems to be an initiation thing - Be an emergency for 20 games and we might play you next year!
              Staying ahead of the game...

I agree it is interesting that everyone keeps mentioning the players that will have an impact next year yet his name is hardly mentioned I rate him highly but we will just have to wait and see.
                cheers Ian
