At least, they were given a chance which they were not able to capitalize on. This is great thing about Roo and the current administration. All young draftees are all given a chance.

It is fair too, Thewlis has shown nothing to be persisted with when he was on the park. For James, it is his age more than anything else. If he is 22 or younger, I am sure the club might have considered to keep him but he is 24, turning 25 and he could need at least another 20-30 games before he could consistently perform at AFL level. That would mean about another 2 seasons, by then he does not have much life left as an AFL footballer. And there is a risk with his injuries too. It is pity really and I hope he could stay with the club in some capacity but I dont think he was hard done by the club if anything.

do we have a source on that?

that's bad luck for both of them but we knew it was going to be tough with our list comprising mainly of young players

James was always going to be in trouble after not consolidating his postion this year, while Thewlis didn't do much wrong but probably suffers for the fact that we have plenty of his type

if these are the only ones to go then it shows that Roos and co expect good things from Malceski and Sundqvist (very fortunate IMO)

I can't find any official news of this, so I'm still hoping its not true. James is understable from a footballing point of view, but to delist Thewlis would be puzzling to say the least. He was an emergency for numerous times in the last couple of weeks. Maybe the club is hoping to do what they did with Buchanan last year and re-draft him.

i wouldn't be suprised if we do re-draft a player with our 3rd pick in the draft - especially as it won't be until deep in to the 3rd round. I guess it depends on who may potentially be available to us in the PSD

Geelong were in a similar position a few years back and re-drafted 2 of their players that they were forced to de-list due to afl draft rules

I'm very sad if James has been delisted. Maybe there are some lingering physical limitations from his injury woes but he played some pretty decent football early in the season and always looked a class above in the reserves games. It also leaves us with very little physically mature cover in the backline if we were to lose Barry, B2 or Schaubs to injury.

Thewlis surprises me less but it is still sad to see someone go with limited opportunities.

                Source on this?
                If true:
The writing has been on the wall for Heath James for quite a while - he wasn't getting a game even when fit and frankly, he could barely bend over. He was a pretty easy call I imagine (decision wise, not personally).

Thewlis is different. He got a couple of games and I thought he was next in line - apparently not. Maybe he will be redrafted in Round 3, but if the draft is average-poor who says he'll still be there?

I can sort of understand James, although disappointed..

However, Thewlis? I thought he showed quite a bit when given his very limited opportunities.

I wouldn't be surprised at all to see us re-list him in the national draft.

Has this been confirmed yet. Nothing on the Swans or AFL websites, nothing in the papers...

(I expect it is, just wondering though if it is official - and would there be one or two more to come? I've lost count)

It is confirmed. Thewlis has been asked to return after the break so maybe they are looking at re-drafting him as they did with Amon last year. How does the pre season draft work? Would both and James be eligible for this?

I am very surprised with Thewlis being de-listed. One would think that after playing a few games this year, he would not be let go. Especially before the likes of Powell and Sunny who have had many more opportunities to prove themselves.... they are just my thoughts though.

heaht james is a no talent hack. Im glad to see him go. injuries kept him at the club 4 yeers longer than he should of been takeing up space for some kid with some ability. thewlis might get drafted back. he has a bit of ability at leest.

                            Not worth the trouble.

I thought James looked good in his few games - a hell of a lot better than McVeigh and Ablett [hell, better than Maxfield at times] - and was actually very surprised he was dropped. I worry that we are lacking tall defenders - particularly given the likes of Schauble and Barry have long injury histories. Why on earth would the likes of Powell stay on the list ahead of James?

He is a little older and more experienced than JMcV so I am not sure that is a fair comparison.
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time
