this years draft picks from years gone by (only the good ones)

A bit bored so I have gone threw all the old drafts and picked out the players who were selected with our picks for this year (31,47,63). I have left off all the duds

    1990

    Fabian Francis (Melb) pick 63
Went on to make his name wuth Port Adelaide

    1991

    Glenn Manton (Ess) 47
Went on to be a successful player with carlton

    1992

    Shane Wakelin (St.K) 31
    Current Coll'wood fullback

    1993

    Mark Stevens (Kang) 31
Key player for Adelaide who has been struckdown with injuries

    1995

    Brent Harvey (kang) 47
    Key playmaker for the Roos

    1996

    Jess Sinclair (Frem) 31
    Backman know with the Kangaroos

    Brent Montgomery (W.B) 47
Priemership player with Port this year

    1997

    Simon Black (Bris) 31
If you don't know what Black has done you don't know football

    1999

    Paul Chapman (Geel) 31
    Handy player for the cats

    Corey Enright (Geel) 47
Utility who can be used anywhere for the cats

    2001

    A.Welsh (Ess) 47
    Agressive half back for Essendon

As you can see there has been some handy players picked up with our draft choices with Black the standout followed by Harvey.

Interesting to note that alot of the players picked made their name at other clubs

Haven't counted the last two years as they haven't had enough time to make any impact or were redrafted

          And who did we get?????

Simon Hawking (4 Games), and Brent Green(10 Games).

          That was a fair trade!!!!!

We also grabbed Goodes at 43 that year.

And Fosdike and Fitzgerald prove it is a lottery before pick 5.

...or, alternatively, (dare I say it) that some clubs are better at picking/developing young talent than others...

In fairness to the swans the drafting process has been further refined since then with the use of such measures as the draft camp so that the exceptional players are well known to all clubs

I'm not sure that it was the case when fossie and fitzy were taken

The draft camp was in place well before the 1998 draft, so we had that info available to us when picking Fitzgerald and Fosdike.
                      Once was, now elsewhere

i stand corrected Robbie, but i still don't think that the draft screening and process was as precise then as it is now

doesn't change that we stuffed up on fitzy and fossie though!
