I'd say once he gets to 28 or 29, and we arent a serious contender, he'll probably head home.

Lot more will come into it than that - first of all his earning capacity is obviously many times greater with us and secondly his girlfriend is Australian and may be his wife by then, so it probably isn't as simple as let's pack up and move so I can stop receiving a few hundred thousand a year to play for Kerry again...for free.

You have to remember what audience he is speaking to there - I truly think he is in for the long haul with us. In our best 22, is a bit of a star and seems to be having a great life here.

Gaelic Football is no longer an exclusively amateur sport. Within the next few years it is highly likely that the top Gaelic footballers will be paid similar amounts to their AFL counterparts.

My Irish friends don't think it will be as simple as that because of the population size and the amount of counties playing - but if it does get to that point, it certainly takes the money issue out of the equation...I still think there are a lot of things that will keep him in our game and country though.

i cant remember where i read it but he said that going home and playing for kerry will happen after he wins a premiership with the swans... if he wins the norm smith, id be happy to see him happy and see him go home

No chance. As Damien pointed out, they have more than twice the number of top-level teams, with only about 15-20% of the population. Victoria (~ equivalent in population size) has enough trouble sustaining 10 teams, let alone 32!

If Tadhg goes back (I believe he will around the age of 30), he will be a wage worker at the local post office or something of the like.

He is, however, seen as the lost superstar. I remember reading an article about a year ago (these stories always pop up each October, when he's visiting his family) how there is a LOT of pressure in Kerry for him to return.

Given that he is (or at least was) studying for an arts degree at UNSW, one would hope that he might aspire a little higher than that.

Depends on how much business is based in County Kerry of course!! However I am sure they will find the prodigal son a nice job

I read that too - it was in an Irish paper. I think he said that he wanted to win a premiership with Kerry after winning one with the Swans. Bloody oath - all this and he was a great soccer player too - I don't think he needs to be too concerned about career choice for arts graduates.

errr and to get back on topic, although I imagine he will go back and play for Kerry at some point, considering the audience of the piece I am sure there was just a little bit of "keep the paddys happy" in it.

Despite ramblings from over here there is no chance that the GAA will go professional in the short term.

I don't believe that the majority of players are set up with cushy jobs although i'm sure that it does happen, even so i doubt anything over here will be able to compete with the $$ available in the AFL over the next 10 years
