Yep, can see this rationale with other jobs - doesn't matter if you lost the company a few million dollars and some major clients, just as long as you did your best and wore your nicest suit while doing it...

As a serious answer to your question Footyhead- I think that if in 5 years we continued to be middle of the road (well "upper" middle of the road) and just being competitive, the Swans would then have to look at (and a very serious look at that) whether Roos is the man to win a premiership with us, and also if the staff (such as Barham etc) are the correct support staff to have at the club along with the standard player review.

The goal always has to be win the premiership, I do get concerned when supporters just want positive win/loss ratios and for them to try hard, this is a multi-million dollar business, trying hard doesn't win over new fans and generally doesn't really win premierships - so if we look no closer in 5 years, the club has to implement a new direction. What that is I do not know.

Positive win/loss, trying hard etc can be looked at as positives after the season, but in my opinion, that is a loser attitude and one I hope the swans never ever have.

However we will win it in 2005 and this will not matter

              You talk nonsense.

Here's the thing; if I were a player, I would obviously want to win a Premiership in my brief career. More than anything. It would be my sole aim in life. Similarly if I were a coach. Ryan Fitzgerald's comments on Big Brother typify what I want to hear from a player ("I would do anything for footy"). But I am a supporter, not a player. Like my father and his father was before him. Hopefully my son will follow. There's really no rush as far as I'm concerned, I'm following the team regardless.

This discussion has been had before, but there are fundamental differences (to me, at least) between what I, as a supporter, "require" from the club, what I aspire for the club to achieve, and what I think the club should be setting itself for.

As a supporter - and outsider from the club - the quality of my life experience is not dependent on the Swans winning a flag. It is (partly) dependent on me being able to manage my off-season pangs with something to look forward to, and to be able to spend each week during the season genuinely looking forward to the following week's game because I know "my team" will at least be competitive.

It would change if - over the long term - I got out of the habit of stomping around home and office for a few days after each loss, or bouncing into the office after a victory, simply because I had been dished up with the insipid efforts that Hawks or Tigers fans had to put up with this year, or Saints fans were given for year after year.

Nah, that's a lousy analogy, and you know it.

We are talking about highly-paid professional ENTERTAINERS, not businessmen. If the team wins a premiership and the club goes broke, has the team let us down? Of course not. The job of the team is to entertain the paying public as best they can . . . . which to most of us means winning as much as possible.

And there are plenty of corporate entities out there who aren't driven by a win-at-all-costs ethos . . . who are prepared to sacrifice dollars for a better world, whatever that may mean.

Your cynicism is getting the better of you!

You didn't answer the question you asked Fhead.

What is it that you will do personally ? How will you deliver the flag that we all crave? I'm intrigued. Clearly posting on this board isn't working for you, you must have a cunning plan in mind.

What will I do ? Continue to go to the footy, knowing that hope springs eternal at Round 1 in every year.

If the Swans do not win a flag in the next six years this is what I will do...

                          * Still scream my lungs out every single week cheering the team I have supported all my life.
                          * Look forward to going to the SCG in the Bill O'Reilly Stand, meeting with friends and enjoying the footy.
                          * Continue to dream of a premiership but NOT demand one. I don't just support the Swans to win the premiership but rather because I LOVE FOOTY and watching the SWANNIES!
                          * Talk up footy at work and encourage people to come along and be involved.

No matter what happens, for my living life even if we finish last every year, I will ALWAYS SUPPORT my team, the mighty Sydney Swans!

I hope we all will be doing the same!

Hardly surprising when the aim of professional sports is to win the top prize, and people still don't seem too fussed if we never do.

The analogy is a bit stretched, but still applicable - they have a job to do and are required to do it well. Whatever the job happens to be. Professional sportsmen are out there to win and entertain - the two purposes of sports.

I 'require' them to win and to play good football. I don't care about anything else to a large extent (eg: family days, Kokoda walks, etc). Professional sports are about winning and being entertaining - we've had very few years where we've managed both (less than half a dozen in the past few decades, and I exclude last year from that as it was boring to watch) and in no case have we managed the ultimate win.
As a supporter - and outsider from the club - the quality of my life experience is not dependent on the Swans winning a flag.
My quality of life isn't even dependent on them playing good football - I have other things far far more important. However, as one of my interests I enjoy it when they win and play well and would enjoy it far more if they won a flag. As I say, it is the ultimate purpose of professional sports teams.

And if they should go on being a good team- but not a great team who at least makes the grand final for the next 5 years. How will you see the team under the current regime ?

I would respectfully suggest that we all brace ourselves for a long and arduous journey into the lower to middle echelons of the AFL's final 8.
If this happens how will you react ? mmm... I think it may well be buisness as usual around here.
I guess i would be very fustrated! This team tests out my patience right now,let alone 5 years time!I demand better from the team! With the list we have,we should go a lot further than we do!I just want one more GF appearance!A premiership would do just nicely!Look, regardless of how the team performs in the next 5-6 years,i will be as loyal as ever!!!!!
