What I had meant was how much they REALLY follow the swans rather than just throwing a scarf around their neck and turning up at a function. Other names on the Ambassador list were people like Geraldine Doogue, Sandon Stolle, Layne Beachley, Deborah Mailman. Perhaps they enjoy the accolade of having their names associated.

Geraldine Doogue is a past speaker at a pre-season function and her passion for the Swans was evident from her speech.

I also once heard Deborah Mailman speak (it was on TV, I can't recall the exact context but it was general TV, not a sports orientated show, quite possibly a show aimed at the female market) about the things she was passionate about. It was one of the most entertaining, funny speeches I have ever heard. The routine went for about 15 minutes and she must have mentioned the Swans a dozen or so times during it. She is a Swans nut.

It is undoubtedly true that there are celebrities who like to jump on the bandwagon when it's fashionable. However, don't assume that all celebrities who associate themselves with the Swans are less passionate about them than your typical RWO'er.

Other keynote speakers at Swans functions whose passion has been loud and clear have included David Wenham and Colin Friels.

Casey from Australian Idol had a Swans scarf hanging on her wall. I think she's a fan.

is this something that can be quantified? this is not directed at yourself, but many SWANS FANS seem to believe that they are SWANS FANS over and above many others and i've had a (drunken 1:30 am) gutful of the martyrdom.

i friggen love 'em, and i'm glad for anyone else to feel that way, however they express it.

i believe in diversity; i believe that one does not need to be loud to be passionate.
then again, i think it would be worth trying 15-16 players on field so what would i know

In a way, I'm more gratified by the masses of the vaguely interested. After the Lions knocked us out of the finals last year I had to go to a party in a pub in Balmain. Everyone appeared to know the results of the game and offered sympathy (I was still in Swans colours) and all had an awareness of how far the club had come against expections. That was the night I realised the Swans really were Sydney's AFL team - not the team of a few diehard AFL fans in Sydney.
