That's FULL training - until then he's most likely on a modified program to try to get his fitness somewhere up near standard and get his knee right so that he can start training with the rest of the boys.

            Not funny.
I have a similar injury to what Powell has. Its called Compartment Syndrome and it appears in the calves.
it is a large build up of lactic acid in the 4 calf compartments and this compresses the faschia (layer of fat) between each compartment. this causes a loss of blood flow and the calf goes rock solid and the acid build up can not be released. it causes multiple injuries such as tearing, knots etc and is EXTREMELY painful.
the only way to cure it is to have an operation where both sides of the shin bone is cut open (knee to ankle) and drained and cleaned out. its an injury found in footballers and hockey players (of which i am one) and is hard to treat, extremely hard to manage and not alot is known about the injury.
i feel for Powell - i have to have the operation in around a month if i dont improve either....
And the man who started it, the Schneiderman, can kick his third for the quarter. And the swans are in the Grand Final!

              Ouch!!

Sounds bad, didn't mean to be frivolous about the injury but it did sound odd when I read it, and I have never heard of it before.

              Hope all goes well LS!

You have to look outside your mind to find your inner peace, which is actually in the next room through the 400th door from the left, but you already have the answer, you just don't know it!

That is not actually correct !

Not trying to be a smart arse, just hoping your have not been mislead, Fascia just fibrous tissue surrounding muscle (not fat). By its nature, not overly vascular (not much blood flow) but that is not in itself what causes compartment syndrome.

Suggest you possibly have a chat with another sports Dr or with same one again. Important you understand nature of problem for rehab reasons.

Take it as you will !

I think my english was shot to pieces when i tried to write that reply..... Basically compartment syndrome is not open and shut - there is no 'cure' and it is not understood fully what causes, or what type of physiology and why is prone to CS, so its really hard to argue and tell people the basics of the injury. it can take many forms - the 'least painful' being basic shin splints and the worst meaning you need to have a compartment release.

maybe i worded wrong - i meant that the fascia was a thin layer of fat not it surrounding fat.

Of course blood flow doesnt cause compartment syndrome but the lack of blood flow is actually a problem caused by compartment syndrome and can lead to severe cramping where the muscle does not release and remains rock hard.

Compartment sydnrome is purely a physiological thing - some have it others dont. its to do with how your body is built. i have extremely bowed legs and well built calves which mean that my problem is accentuated.
My sports Dr is actually Dr Nathan Gibbs - you may have heard of him, he works with the swans. but thanks for your concern - its more than some of my coaches have shown!
